Benefit for Able to Serve
Able to Serve will have a dinner and silent auction fundraiser from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, April 17, at First Baptist Church, 601 St. Mary’s St., Garner. Tickets are $25. Yard Sale and Fish Fry

Johnston Community College's Howell Woods Environmental Learning Center will hold its annual Howell Woodstock from 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 18. Howell Woodstock offers many free activities for the family including fishing, hayrides, environmental educational programs, stargazing, nature walks, live music, and a bonfire. Garner High School class of 1970 reunion
The Garner Senior High School class of 1970 will hold its 45-year class reunion from 7 p.m. until midnight on Saturday, June 13, at Carol Poole Clubhouse at Lonnie Poole Golf Course, NCSU Centennial Campus, 1509 Main Campus Drive, Raleigh. There will be a one-day Household Hazardous Waste Collection from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 18, at the Johnston County Livestock Arena, 520 County Home Road, Smithfield. ‘Love your money’ Lunch and Learn
A five-part financial workshop will be offered from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesdays beginning May 6 and concluding June 3 at the Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield, 305 E. Market St., Smithfield. Jayne McBurney of Johnston Cooperative Extension will lead the workshop and cover topics including budgeting, understanding credit and planning for the future. Teen volunteers needed
The Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield, located at 305 E. Market St. in Smithfield, seeks new teen volunteers to assist with the Summer Reading Program. Volunteers will assist with children’s summer programming, shelving books and keeping books in order. Volunteers must fill out an application and attend an orientation from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 13. Aversboro Run Club
Aversboro Run Club meets at 6 p.m. every Thursday outside Aversboro Restaurant & Sports Bar, 1411 Aversboro Road, Garner. The club is open to every runner and walker, and runs set routes of 3, 4 and 5 miles covering many paces. The restaurant offers food and drink specials to all walkers and runners upon their return.
Johnston County MS Support Group
The Johnston County MS Support Group meets at 11 a.m. on the third Thursday of the month at The Church at Clayton Crossings, 11407 US Hwy 70 W. Clayton. The group is open to those dealing with MS and their families and is free of charge.
A food pantry is open from 9 a.m. to noon on the second Saturday of each month at Christ Community United Methodist Church, 1082 Amelia Church Road, Clayton. The food is free to anyone presenting an ID card. For more information, call 919-934-0213.
Partnership for Children of Johnston County offers two programs for parents with young children.
Motheread is a 12-week self-paced program that combines the teaching of literacy skills with child development and family empowerment issues.
The Incredible Years parent program offers weekly group sessions for 14 to 16 weeks. Participants practice skills to promote children’s academic, social and emotional skills.

Taking Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) Chapter 0678 meets from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday at The Garner Senior Center, 205 E. Garner Rd., Garner. The purpose of the group is to provide support, share information about healthy living and celebrate success with weight loss. Participants must pay $32 for yearly national dues and $3 monthly local dues.
