Citizens Academy

Garner’s fall Midday Garner 101 Citizens Academy starts in August with classes from 10 a.m. to noon Thursdays.

In the nine-week series of classes, Garner residents will learn about their local government, participate in presentations and go on facility tours. Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library’s program ends at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 30, at 100 S. Church St., Clayton.

Class reunion

The Garner High School class of 1966’s 50th class reunion will be Saturday, Aug. 6. For details, call Bobbie Cramer Buffaloe at 919-772-6966 or Krisan Cochrane Gregson at 919-772-6921.

‘The Princess Bride’

“The Princess Bride” will be shown for free at an event with food trucks and craft beer on the Garner Performing Arts Center lawn at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, at 742 W. Garner Road.

“Back to the Future” will be screened at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25.

Art Faire

Up to 50 entries for Clayton’s 18th annual Art Faire competition will be accepted until Friday, Aug. 26, with an entry fee of $40 ($25 for Clayton Visual Arts members).

Artwork will be on display in September and early October. A reception with awards will be on Thursday, Sept. 8. The 10 awards for photography and two-dimensional fine arts total $2,100.

Class reunion

Register by Wednesday, Aug. 31, for Garner Senior High School class of 1981’s 35th reunion.

The reunion will be 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at Aversboro Restaurant and Sports Bar, 1411 Aversboro Road, Garner. Sign up for $25 per person at gshs81.com/reunion.html.

Labor Day

Clayton and Garner town offices will be closed on Monday, Sept. 5.

Carnaval Latino

Carnaval Latino, with music, food and arts and crafts, is 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, at the Garner Performing Arts Center, 742 W. Garner Road.

Garner High School class of 1967

The Garner High School class of 1967 is preparing for its 50th class reunion in 2017. Organizers are trying to reach everyone who started their freshman year at Garner High School in 1963. If you have not been contacted, call Gayle Hines at 919-772-2383.

Johnston County Amateur Radio

The Johnston County Amateur Radio Emergency Service is looking for licensed amateur radio operators interested in providing auxiliary communications in times of disaster. You do not have to be a resident of Johnston County to volunteer. ARES meets at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of each month at the American Red Cross office, 805-A S. Third St., Smithfield. TOPS

Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) has two chapters in Garner. One meets from 6-7 p.m. Mondays. Call Cindy Creech at 919-763-0123 for details. The other group meets from 2-3 p.m. Fridays. Call Mary Lou Meranda at 919-577-0709 for more information or visit tops.org. Both meetings are at the Garner Senior Center, 205 E. Garner Road. The purpose of the group is to provide support, share information about healthy living and celebrate success with weight loss.

Johnston County MS Support Group

The Johnston County MS Support Group meets at 11 a.m. the third Tuesday of the month at The Church at Clayton Crossings, 11407 U.S. 70 W. Clayton. These free meetings are open to people with multiple sclerosis and their families.

Overeaters Anonymous

An Overeaters Anonymous support group meets at 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays at First Presbyterian Church of Garner, 503 Lakeside Drive. Park in the rear of the church and look for the OA signs. Call Sherylyn at 919-779-6392 or Regina at 919-614-3425 for more information.

Parenting workshops

Partnership for Children of Johnston County offers two programs for parents with young children.

Motheread is a 12-week self-paced program that combines teaching literacy skills with child development and family empowerment.

The Incredible Years parent program offers weekly group sessions for 14 to 16 weeks. Participants learn to promote children’s academic, social and emotional skills.
