Letter: April is a time to be aware

As April is both Child Abuse Prevention Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Month, it is timely to talk about these epidemics that happen to people of all backgrounds and to remind people that Harbor is here to help. Recent news reports have hit too close to home, and it is hard to believe that these horrific acts of violence can happen here in Johnston County. However, they do. It has left us searching for answers and wondering what we could have done to prevent this type of violence.

It is vital that the community work together to prevent child abuse and sexual assault, and it is all of our responsibilities to keep children safe. Children who are abused or witness abuse are significantly more likely to be trapped in that same cycle of violence, and it’s important to be aware of the available resources to prevent this cycle from continuing. Harbor is hosting a candle light vigil in Teghan Skiba’s memory on April 15, at 6 p.m. on the front steps of the Johnston County Courthouse. This is an opportunity to raise awareness and work together to end child abuse and sexual assault in Johnston County.
