Garner offers so many opportunities for people to engage in fun, social events.
Whether its playing in a basketball league or attending the local Independence Day celebration, there’s just a lot of fun stuff to do.
Those things often rely on volunteers to make them work. Garner, too, is blessed with residents who feel the tug of volunteerism and respond.
And, for those who experience setbacks in life, whether they be health-related or financial, there are volunteer organizations in place to help meet some of those needs.
Few people who volunteer in any capacity do so for the personal aggrandizement. Instead, they see a need and they believe in the purpose they are fulfilling.
There’s no good way to objectively quantify the value of volunteer hours across so many spectrums, which is unfortunate because we are sure such information would be incredibly useful to people who are working to grow our town.
The spirit of volunteerism speaks to the quality of life here in Garner. People who don’t believe their community is a great place to be aren’t likely to lift a finger to make it better. But in Garner volunteers are easy to find. That’s a signal that people here believe Garner’s a great place to be. Any new business considering making a home in Garner would be pleased to see the town’s residents’ faith in their community.
That’s likely to mean more people staying at home to shop, more people seeking services here in Garner and more people spreading the word about what’s good in Garner.
To be sure, businesses will look at other metrics when making important decisions like locating in a new market. But all other things being equal they certainly would rather be in a place where the people are invested in the future of the community.
Volunteers are a sure sign that people are invested in just that way. So the next time you see someone volunteering, be sure you thank them. Then get in line to volunteer along with them.
