Garner continued its high-scoring ways as the NCHSAA 4A boys basketball playoffs opened Saturday, rolling by Wilmington Ashley 97-57.
The Trojans (23-1) moved into a second round game against Hope Mills South View with the victory.
Garner, the top-ranked team in the News & Observer area poll and averaging 80.9 points a contest on the season, had six players finish in double-figures. Thomas Allen led that group with 19, while Julius Barnes added 18. Javonte Sims notched 15 points, while Nick Kuhns and Alex Reed had 11 each. Jashaun Smith contributed 10 points.
Garner doubled up Ashley’s scoring in the first quarter (26-13) and led 47-25 at the half.

Southeast Raleigh girls dominate New Bern: Southeast Raleigh’s offense got better every quarter Saturday and its defense stayed at the usual stingy level. The result? A 87-44 romp by New Bern in the opening round of the 4A girls basketball state playoffs.
The Bulldogs (22-3) held the Bears to 20 first-half points and led 39-20 at the break. Southeast posted quarter scores of 17, 22, 23 and 25, respectively.
Jada McMillian led the Bulldogs with 17 points, while Jade Phillips had 16 and Cherelle Turrentine had 11.
