Trojan Challenge 5K moved to May 16
South Johnston High School has changed the dates of the Trojan Challenge 5K, a 5K obstacle course run. The event will now be held on May 16 at 9 a.m. on the school campus. The entry fee is $15 or $10 for students. Funds will benefit the South Johnston track and field programs. Mudcats National Anthem tryouts are March 28
The Carolina Mudcats will hold tryouts for National Anthem singers at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 28, at Five County Stadium. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the event ends at noon. All singers, including solo acts or groups, who would like to sing the “Star Spangled Banner” before a Mudcats’ game this season are required to attend. Tarheel Seniors Golf Association
The Tarheel Seniors Golf Association will hold 16 events this year across the area from March until October with events at The Neuse, River Ridge, Falls Village, Bentwinds, 12 Oaks, Zebulon Country Club, Lochmere, Devils Ridge and Eagle Ridge. Free Turkey Hunting Seminar
The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission and the National Wild Turkey Federation will offer free turkey hunting seminars across the state in March and April. The seminars, which will be conducted on introductory and advanced levels, will be held from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. at eight locations throughout the state. They are open on a first-come, first-serve basis to all ages, although participants 16 years and younger will need parental permission to register. The introductory seminars are designed for novice hunters or those who have never hunted turkey and would like to learn more. Topics will include biology, hunting methods, calls and decoys, firearms and ammo selection, camouflage clothing, and turkey cleaning and cooking techniques. The advanced seminars are for experienced turkey hunters. They will focus on advanced biology, and more complex hunting tactics, calls and decoys. Advanced seminars also will include tips and strategies for dealing with stubborn, hard-to-hunt gobblers. A local seminar will be held at N.C. State University’s Centennial Campus Center on March 17 (advanced). 5K race training
Flowers Plantation’s Spring Couch to 5K will help participants train for a 5K race in a fun and supportive group. Red Cross Lifeguard Training
Four sessions of American Red Cross Lifeguard Training will be held at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center. Participants must be at least 15 years old, pass a pre-course swim test and attend all class sessions in full. The pre-course swim test includes a 300-yard swim with rhythmic breathing and breath control using freestyle or the breaststroke, a two-minute water tread using only your legs, and a distance swim after retrieving a brick in nine feet of water. The fee for the pre-course is $25. The class fee is $175-200. Classes are set for four days (including 20 hours of instruction) March 22-29, April 26 - May 3 and May 11-17. Sessions cannont be mixed. 2015 Horse Show Series
The Johnston County Horse Show Series offers fun and exciting shows while still maintaining a down home atmosphere that encourages family participation. The shows, mostly held at the Johnston County Livestock Arena near Smithfield, are open shows that welcome riders and horses/mules from all riding levels, breeds and disciplines. JCHSS offers classes in Halter, Western, Working Western, Hunters & Jumping, Dressage Suitability, Trail, Miniature equines, Driving and English. Classes are placed through eighth place with 21 championship divisions per show. Show dates for 2015 are April 11, May 31, June 27, Sept. 19, Oct. 31 and Nov. 14. A three-day show is also set for Aug. 7-9 at the Hunt Horse Complex in Raleigh. A negative coggins test within one year is required.
