Recreational softball league

The Garner Parks Dept. will offer a recreational softball league for ages 18 and older beginning in July. The league will be fun and fellowship-focused and played on Tuesday and Thursday nights at the Creech Road School Park. There will be a two home run rule in place and trophies will be presented to the champions. Teams deemed too strong by the Garner Parks staff will be asked to make roster changes. The league meeting — where final registration is due — will be held July 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Avery Street Recreation Center. The fee is $450 per team and $25 per non-resident player on the roster.

Men's 50-plus softball league

The Garner Parks Dept. will offer a recreational softball league for ages 50 and older beginning in July. The league meeting — where final registration is due — will be held July 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Avery Street Recreation Center. The fee is $450 per team and $25 per non-resident player on the roster.

30 and Over Basketball League

The Garner Parks and Recreation Department will offer a 30-and-older basketball league beginning in September. Teams will be randomly divided on Thursday, Sept. 3 — the night of the league meeting at the Avery Street Recreation Center. Online registration ends Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. In-person registration (with a valid ID) will be accepted at the league meeting.

N.C. Boating Education Course

The Garner Parks Dept. will offer a N.C. Boating Education taught by officers from the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission for ages 12 and older in July. The six-hour course covers boat operation, legal requirements and handling emergencies. Participants ages 14-16 will become certified to operate a personal watercraft. Preschool sports leagues

Preschool sports leagues for ages 4-5 are instruction-based and focus on teamwork and sportsmanship. All leagues will have five practices and three games on Saturday mornings at either 8:30 or 9:30 at the Avery Street Recreation Center. Mini Sluggers (baseball and softball0 will be offered from July 18 through Sept. 5. Mini Heisman (flag football) will run from Sept. 19 until Oct. 31. The cost is $30-40 per sport. Preschool sports seminars

The Garner Parks and Recreation Department offers three-week fundamental sports opportunities where the basics of the game are taught throughout the summer at the Avery Street Recreation Center. Leagues are held on Wednesdays for 45-minute sessions at 5 and 6 p.m. T-ball from July 15-29 and basketball from Aug. 12-26. The cost is $15-22 per sport.

Preschool Sports Camp

A preschool sports camp will be offered at the Avery Street Annex from June 23-25 from 9-11 a.m. daily. The camp features football, soccer, T-ball and more. The fee is $30-40.

Soccer Camp

A youth soccer camp for ages 7-16 will be offered at Centennial Park in Garner from July 20-24. Camp is from 9 a.m. until noon daily. The fundamentals of soccer will be the focus of the camp. Challenge-level soccer coaches will direct the camp. The fee is $140-175 per camper.

Volunteer Youth Coaches

Tennis lessons

An assortment of junior tennis lessons for ages 8-17 will be held throughout the summer at the South Garner Tennis Courts. Most sessions run four weeks and feature hour-long instruction sessions. Fees range from $30-84 depending on the age group and level of play. Contact the Parks Dept. for specifics.

Adult tennis lessons are also available in four-week cycles throughout the year. The cost is $76-99. Contact the Parks Dept. for dates.

Youth open gym at Avery Street Recreation Center

Youth open gym sessions for ages 6-17 will be held from 2-5 p.m. on Saturdays at the Avery Street Recreation Center from Feb. 7 until March 28. There are games, activities and basketball available each week. There is no charge for the event.

Adult open gym

Adult open gym organized pick-up basketball games are played from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesdays at the Avery Street Recreation Center. Ages 18 and older can participate. The cost is $2-3. Registration is not required.

Fitness Classes and Activities

The Garner Parks Department offers a variety of fitness training classes including Zumba, belly dancing, dancing, step classes and more. For info, visit garnernc.gov or call the Parks Department.

Fall youth sport sign-ups

The Clayton Parks and Recreation Department's fall fast-pitch softball, youth soccer and girls volleyball seasons will open registration on June 1 for family annual members and on June 15 for open registration. Sign-ups close on June 29 or when the group is full. The fee is $25-60.

Coed soccer is offered for ages 4-5 and 6-7) as of July 31. Fast-pitch softball is for the 8U, 10U, 12U and 14U age groups (as of Jan. 1, 2016). Volleyball will have age groups 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14 (as of Oct. 15). The softball and volleyball teams will travel for games throughout Johnston County and into Wake County for games. All seasons run from August through October.

Kids run, jump and throw for free

The Clayton Parks and Recreation Department will offer a free hands on learning program to get kids excited about physical activity to basic running, jumping and throwing skills in track and field at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 30 at East Clayton Community Park (2027 Glen Laurel Road). There is no charge to participate but participants should register online at runjumpthrow.usatf.org; check in starts at 9:30 a.m. on the day of the event.

Summer Playground Program

The Clayton Parks and Recreation Department’s Summer Playground Program runs from June 15 until Aug. 14 from 7:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. weekdays. Registration is now open. The fee is $60-110 per week plus a $25 registration fee. There is a 10 percent discount for multiple siblings. The Summer Playground Program features daily activities including indoor/outdoor games, arts and crafts, gardening, and many more activities. Campers will need to bring lunch, two snacks and drinks. Our Summer Camp is mainly outdoors, weather permitting.

Tennis for ages 10-and-under

Quick Start Tennis is specifically designed for children under 10 to learn the basics of tennis such as hand-eye coordination, footwork and racquet control. A six-week run of lessons on Tuesdays will be held at Clayton Community Park. Ages 5-7 train from 6 until 6:45 p.m.; ages 8-10 from 7 until 7:45 p.m. The new session starts May 12. The fee is $40-55.

Beginner tennis lessons

No experience required beginner tennis lessons will be offered at Clayton Community Park for ages 11 and up beginning April 28. Ages 11-15 train from 6:30 until 7:25 p.m. and ages 15 and up play from 7 until 7:45 p.m. for a four-week session. The fee is $30-45.

Intermediate tennis lessons

Those with some tennis playing experience can take intermediate tennis lessons (ages 14 and up) at Clayton Community Park on Thursdays, beginning April 30 for a four-week run. The cost is $35-50.

Girls Volleyball Camp

A Volleyball Camp for girls ages 9-14 will be held at the Clayton Community Center gym from 9 a.m. until noon from June 16-19.. Basic skills and other fundamental basic game principals of volleyball will be the focus. The camp fee is $45 for residents and $90 for non-residents.

Two tennis camps with the Clayton Parks and Recreation Department will be held July 27-31 (a Quickstart camp for ages 7-10) and Aug. 3-7 (a camp for ages 11-16) at Clayton Community Park. The camps run from 9 a.m. until noon daily and if a rain day is needed, it will be held on Saturday of that week. The fee is $60 for residents, $75 for others.

Exercise classes

The Clayton Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of exercise classes, including Zumba, yoga, pilates, cardio kick and more for all ages. For information on the offerings, times and costs visit townofclaytonnc.org online.

Clayton Community Center Memberships

Memberships for use of the Clayton Community Center are available through the Clayton Parks and Recreation Department for residents of the Town of Clayton and non-residents. Non-residents rates vary from $50-160 yearly (depending on ages/numbers of family members), $8-20 monthly or $6-10 monthly. Residents fees are only $5 per year.
