The Raleigh City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to appoint Councilman Thomas Crowder’s wife, Kay, to his post if cancer keeps him from finishing his term.
Earlier this month, Crowder – who’s represented Southwest Raleigh since 2003 – announced that he’s “exhausted all options for a cure” in his battle with testicular cancer. He says he’ll serve as long as his health allows but wants his wife to fill his seat if he can’t.
Crowder’s term expires in December 2015. “I hope my wife doesn’t have the opportunity to do that, but in case she does, I know she will do an excellent job,” he said Tuesday.
The council’s resolution calls for Kay Crowder to take office immediately if her husband resigns. “In order to ensure swift continuity and guarantee seamless representation for District D, the city council wishes to have a plan in place,” it says.
Southwest Raleigh neighborhood leaders have supported the proposal.
“I made this request because Kay has been much more than my life partner,” Crowder said in a prepared statement earlier this month. “She and I have discussed and debated most major decisions I made for the city we love. In addition to her many career accomplishments, Kay graduated from the first Raleigh Neighborhood College and previously served as president of our neighborhood association.”
