Firefighters responding to a house fire in East Raleigh early Monday afternoon initially thought someone was trapped inside, but they later determined that he had gotten out on his own.
The first firefighters to arrive at the single-story home at 2131 Milburnie Road sent in a search group, followed by another group that fought the flames, said Chief M.T. Hayes. Neighbors had said that someone might still be inside as smoke billowed from the back of the house.
Firefighters did not find anyone in the house and later talked to a man who said he had escaped through a front window, Hayes said.
The fire was called in at 12:36 p.m. The house was heavily damaged, but no one was injured.
Three people were displaced.
Investigators determined that the fire was caused by a pot left unattended on the stove, said Capt. Justin Hicks, the fire department spokesman.
