A community group aiming to spruce up the outside-the-Beltline stretch of New Bern Avenue has been honoring fuel purveyors – along with other businesses – for going the extra mile to look good.

Dora King-Morgan leads Citizens and Businesses for a Green, Clean, Safe and Prosperous New Bern Avenue.

Each month, the group awards one business a donated planting from Taylor’s Nursery.

“It’s basically to keep our businesses engaged in keeping up property along this stretch,” King-Morgan said.

In addition to working with businesses, the group is also lobbying city officials for more bus shelters, sidewalks and crosswalks to improve safety along New Bern.

They’re also trying to arrange more frequent median mowing and litter pickup, pointing to the tidier condition of Knightdale’s U.S. 64 Business section.
