Carroll Middle to hold STEM Expo

A STEM Expo is scheduled from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 31, at Carroll Middle School in Raleigh. The expo will inform the community about the science, technology, engineering and mathematics program and highlight STEM projects by students. The PTA will offer dinner on the lawn with Q Shack barbecue beginning at 5 p.m. Dinner is

$6 in advance and $7 at the

Thales junior high team wins certamen

Students from Thales Academy Junior High in Wake Forest participated in the N.C. Junior Classical League State Convention, a gathering of middle and high school student chapters celebrating an interest in and appreciation of the language, literature and culture of ancient Greece and Rome. The event was held April 20-21 at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Thales’ team was named middle school state champions of the certamen competition. Certamen is a game of fast recall of facts about classical civilizations and its peoples, languages and cultures.

Individual award winners included: Michael Bono, James Bury, Mackenzie Green, Julia McNamara, Chris Newton, Alexander Oddo, Kaylee Kizior, Belle Kozubowski, Rebecca Taylor and Lili Watkins.

Humanities teacher Ashlie Canipe was the academic sponsor. Thales students Evan Gales, Lian Grissino and Nicholas Oddo also participated.

Several of the students will compete at the National Junior Classical League Convention at Wake Forest University July 26-31.
