Athens Drive band to sell barbecue
Athens Drive High School marching band is holding a barbecue fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, at Swift Creek Community Center, Yates Mill Pond Road, Raleigh. Plates include barbecue pork, fried chicken, hush puppies, potatoes, slaw and sweet tea for $8. Desserts will be $1 each.

Book celebrates Ravenscroft’s 150th
Award-winning photographer Billy Howard, a 1973 Ravenscroft graduate, will exhibit his photography and release the school’s 150th anniversary book at a reception from noon to 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, on campus. Workshops on choosing a college
Wake County Public Libraries is offering workshops on how to choose the right college. Discussions will help students and parents find a “good fit” school that matches the student’s academic, social and financial situation. Tips are offered on making the most of a campus visit and on being an informed college shopper. The sessions are free, but registration is required by calling the local library.

School system offers parent workshops
Wake County is offering the following parent workshops:
• Supporting Literacy and Math at Home for Elementary Students, Tuesday, Oct. 2.
• College is Possible, Tuesday, Oct. 24.
• Understanding Special Education, Tuesday, Oct. 30.
• Understanding the U.S. Educational System, Tuesday, Nov. 6.
All workshops run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Millbrook Magnet High, 2201 Spring Forest Road, Raleigh.
Child care is available for children 4-13 years old. All sessions are free, but parents must register to attend.

Marching band event at Wakefield
The Wakefield High School Band Boosters will hold the 10th annual Heart of Carolina Marching Band Invitational at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at the school, 2200 Wakefield Pines Drive, Raleigh. Performances begin at 5.
The event will feature performances by high school bands from throughout North Carolina. Cost is $10 for general admission, $8 for senior citizens and $5 for children 10 and younger.

Cape Fear River Watch scholarship contest
Cape Fear River Watch is offering a scholarship essay contest for high school seniors.
The contest, meant to promote interest in environmental conservation, was created to engage students pursing college majors in environmental sciences, biology and wildlife and habitat conservation, as well as to give financial aid for tuition.
The grand prize winner will receive $1,000 toward education expenses at an accredited North Carolina university. The contest opens Oct. 1, and essays must be submitted by Jan. 15.

Students can prepare for college exams by practicing on a real ACT/SAT combination test starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at Richard B. Harrison Community Library, 1313 New Bern Ave., Raleigh.
