Singles ministry offers safe, fun New Year’s alternative

On New Year’s Eve, bars and restaurants will be filled with people celebrating the end of 2012 and the arrival of 2013. In the Great Room at Crossroads Fellowship church, singles will be toasting with non-alcoholic drinks and learning new dance steps together.

“We hold the dance each year as alternative to the bar scene to provide a single adults a place to connect with each other in a safe environment,” said George Karampelas, singles pastor at Crossroads Fellowship.

During the evening, a DJ will play music from the ’60s through current hits and hors d’oeuvres will be served. From 8 to 9 p.m., a local dance instructor will teach a variety of dance steps, including salsa and the swing.

Since the dances began more than five years ago, they have attracted about 100 people a year, most of them 35 and older, Karampelas said.

“The dance is always a lot of fun and a great value for your money,” he said. “You will meet a lot of new people, sharpen your dance skills and celebrate with friends.”

Throughout the year, Crossroads Fellowship holds many events as part of its singles ministry, including monthly outings and weekly bible studies. “Our overall mission is to make disciples among the singles in our community and bring people into a relationship with Christ,” Karampelas said.

The dance is set for 8 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31, at the Millbrook Campus of Crossroads Fellowship, 2721 E. Millbrook Road, Raleigh. Suggested attire is ballroom or cocktail dresses for women, and a tux, suit or shirt with a tie for men. French masks are optional. Tickets are $15 at the door, and child care will not be provided.
