Democratic Women of Wake County luncheon

Nina Szlosberg-Landis and Gwen Wilkins, candidates for First Vice Chair of the N.C. Democratic Party, will address the Democratic Women of Wake County at noon Thursday, Jan. 31, at the N.C. State University Club, 4200 Hillsborough St., Raleigh. Buffet lines will open at 11:30 a.m. The cost is $18 for members, $20 for nonmembers and $5 for anyone wishing to attend and not eat. For reservations, email democraticwomenwakecounty@gmail.com or call 919-467-0151. The deadline for reservations is 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29.

Substitute teachers meeting

The Substitute Teachers Association of Wake County will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at Olive Garden, 4805 Capital Blvd., Raleigh. Spouses are invited.

Newcomers Club of Raleigh meeting

The Newcomers Club of Raleigh will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, Feb. 1, at the J.J. Crowder Masonic Lodge #743, 9920 Falls of Neuse Road, Raleigh. For more information, visit newcomersclubraleigh.org.

Lions Club dinner meeting

North Raleigh Lions Club will hold a dinner meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at the Bayleaf Community Center, 11617 Six Forks Road, Raleigh. Nora Casper from the Literary Council of Wake County will speak. For reservations, contact Maggie Crisafi at 919-803-6222 or maggie.crisafi@gmail.com.

Woman’s Club games, luncheon fundraiser

The Woman’s Club of Raleigh will hold B B C (+M), a bridge, bingo, canasta and mahjongg fundraiser on Wednesday, Feb. 6, at 3300 Woman’s Club Drive, Raleigh. Proceeds will benefit Dress for Success Triangle NC and other community projects. The event will include the games, a luncheon and prizes. Cost is $25 per person, with $11 of it tax-deductible.

Wake Forest Woman’s Club

The Wake Forest Woman’s Club meets the first Thursday of each month, September through May, at the Community House, 133 W. Owen Ave., Wake Forest. Optimist Club essay contest

The Northern Wake Optimist Club is holding an essay contest with the topic “How Can I Help My Friends Realize Their Value?” The deadline to apply is Sunday, Feb. 10.

The essay must be 700-800 words, not including the title, footnotes and bibliography. Hyphenated words count as one word. The contest is open to high school students 19 and younger as of Dec. 31, 2012. To see all of the rules and apply, go to www.optimist.org and search “Essay Contest.”

Winners will be invited to read their essays at the club’s meeting on Tuesday, March 5. At the district level, a $2,5000 scholarship will be awarded.

Optimist Club oratorical contest

Northern Wake Optimist Club is holding an oratorical contest on the topic “Why My Voice is Important.” Applications and typed oration must be received by Sunday, March 31. The speech must be 4-5 minutes long. The contest is set for Sunday, April 7.

The contest is open to high school students 19 and younger as of Dec. 31, 2012. For the official rules and to apply, go to www.optimist.org and search “Oratorical Contest.”

Winners will be invited to give their oration at the club’s Tuesday, April 23 meeting. At the district level, $5,000 in scholarships will be given to the top three winners.

Pullen Park Wednesday Dance Club

The Pullen Park Wednesday Dance Club is seeking new members. The club, for attendees 50 years and older, dances to live ballroom music by a different group from 8 to 10:30 p.m. each Wednesday at the Pullen Community Center, 408 Ashe Ave., Raleigh. Admission is $7.
