Wake Forest Woman’s Club

Woman’s Club of Raleigh

The Woman’s Club of Raleigh will meet at noon Wednesday, March 14, at 3300 Woman’s Club Drive, Raleigh. Dr. Warren Eller will share his experiences in doing relief work in East Africa. Diabetes support group

A diabetes support group will meet from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at Milner Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1950 New Bern Ave., Raleigh. Dr. Ernest Daniels will speak on “Exercise and Your Health,” followed by discussion and lunch. The group is led by Mary Clark, R.N. and certified diabetes educator. Optimist Club Oratorical contest

The Northern Wake Optimist Club is holding an oratorical contest on the topic “How my Optimism helps me Overcome Obstacles.” The first place boy and girl will advance to the zone-level competition. From the zone contest, winners will advance to the district level, which has a first prize of a $2,500 scholarship for boy and girl winners. The application and typed speech are due March 30. The speech must be at least four minutes but not more than five. The contest is open to students 18 and younger as of Dec. 31, 2011. Patriotic art contest for youth

The Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 10225, is looking for high school artists to participate in the Young American Creative Patriotic Art contest. For rules and criteria, go to www.ladiesauxvfw.org/programs/youth.html. Each student will be judged on the originality of concept and patriotism expressed, the content and clarity of ideas, the design, use of color and technique, and the total impact or execution and contrast. The national winner will attend the VFW and Auxiliary National Convention in Reno, Nev., in July. The deadline for submissions to the local auxiliary chairman is March 31.
