Broughton, Panther Creek head for dual-team tennis showdown.

Broughton, the 2011 N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A girls’ dual-team tennis runner-up, advanced to the third round of the 2012 tournament with a 6-0 victory Tuesday over New Hanover.

The Caps (20-0) swept all six singles matches, losing only five games. The match was stopped after the singles matches because the outcome had been determined.

New Hanover was the No. 2 seed from the Mideastern 4A and finished 13-5.

“We played very well and our girls were very focused,” said Broughton coach Laura Davidson.

The victory sets up a third-round showdown Monday between Broughton, the Cap Eight 4A champion, and Panther Creek, the Tri-Nine 4A champion. The Catamounts were a 5-1 winner against East Chapel Hill.

The Caps beat Panther Creek (19-1) during the regular season 8-1, but that match used a pro-set format instead of the usual best-of-3 sets.

“Panther Creek has a fabulous team,” Davidson said. “They are just tremendous. It should be a great match.”

Sanderson, 13-3 and the No. 3 seed from the Cap Eight 4A, eliminated Durham Jordan 5-1 and will play Green Hope (19-3 and the Tri-Nine 4A No. 2)

Green Hope battled past the Millbrook 6-0 in a match that was very contested.

The Falcons’ Audrey Channell beat Lauren McCorquodale 4-6, 6-3, (10-6) at No. 1 singles and Green Hope’s Jurasia Horvat and Brantley Belk also won tiebreakers for their No. 3 and No. 4 singles wins.

NCHSAA 3A tennis: Carolina 3A champion Cardinal Gibbons (18-6 and the Carolina 3A champion) swept Northern Guilford 6-0 without dropping a set. The Crusaders will play Union Pines in the third round.
