Broughton junior Maggie Kane took the state singles crown Saturday, defeating Winston-Salem R.J. Reynolds’ Chloe Willetts, 7-5, 6-0, at the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A individual tennis tournament championship.
Willetts won the title as a freshman in 2009.
The title was Kane’s first state singles title, though she won the doubles championship with her sister Katie in 2010 and finished second in doubles last year.
The tournament began Friday at Millbrook Exchange Park, but the threat of inclement weather Saturday moved the final matches indoors to N.C. State University.

Because of the forecast, three rounds were completed Friday and only the championship matches were played on the tournament’s final day.
Kane’s Broughton teammates Adrienne Overcash and Kara Summerford came up short against Panther Creek duo Sammi Smith and Jordan Strickland in the doubles finals, falling 6-0, 6-2.
On Friday, Wakefield freshman Susanne Boyden, who finished behind Kane for second in the Mideast regional, fell to Willetts in the singles quarterfinals.
Broughton’s other competing doubles team of Kelsey Boole and Olivia King, and Millbrook’s Lauren McCorquodale and Savanna Taranto, lost in the semifinal round.
