Floor general Devonte’ Graham paced Broughton on Friday as the Caps routed Wakefield, 53-41 to improve its record to 5-1 in the conference.

Graham scored 13 points and added five rebounds and three assists to his stat line.

“We kind of go as he goes a little bit,” Broughton head coach Jeff Ferrell said.

The Caps sit at second place in the Cap Eight behind undefeated Millbrook. Wakefield dropped to a .500 record, 3-3.

The Wolverines were never able to gain a rhythm on offense. They forced up three-pointers several times in the game and failed to get easy baskets in the paint. Ferrell also said defensive rebounding played a large part in frustrating the Wolverines.

“We really emphasize the rebounding part,” Ferrell said. “It’s so important for us not to give up second-chance opportunities. I thought we did do a good job of that.”

James Hemphill led the Caps in rebounding with seven in the game.

Wakefield’s front line of Logan Evans and Harvey Griffin led it in scoring with eight points each. Griffin led all players in rebounding with 10 for the game. No other member of the Wolverines’ squad compiled more than three boards.

The Caps held the lead throughout the game after gaining control, 6-4, in the first quarter. Its largest lead was the halftime score, 30-13.

Broughton held the Wolverines to five points in the second quarter, but the Caps offense kept its pace in the period, scoring 12.

Wakefield was able to cut the game to nine after a 7-0 run late in the third quarter, but lost its composure early in the fourth quarter succumbing to frustration fouls.

Graham’s down half, according to Ferrell, gave Wakefield a lane to get back into the game in the second half.

“He struggled a little bit in the second half and it showed in our play a little bit, but he’s definitely a guy we need out there all the time,” Ferrell said of Graham.
