16 Cap Eight wrestlers qualify for NCHSAA 4A state tournament

More than a dozen Cap Eight wrestlers will compete to be state champions this week at the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A individual tournament.

Of 69 regional qualifiers from the conference, 16 finished in the top four of their respective weight classes at the Mideast regional at Lee County High last weekend.

Millbrook senior Chris Williams was the lone regional winner from the Cap Eight, taking first place in the 160-pound weight class. His teammate David Robinson qualified for the state tournament in the 170-pound class.

Wake Forest-Rolesville will send the most conference wrestlers to Greensboro, qualifying six, including freshman Nicholas Mutio (106) and Cap Eight Wrestler of the Year Mitchell Goldbach (120).

Jacob Williams (132), Nashid Barrow (138), Evan Brawner (160) and Nicholas Fant (220) will also represent the Cougars.

Sanderson will send Jonathan Gomez-Monzon (145), Christopher Grannan (182), Antwuan Elliott (195), and Sebastion Murray (220).

Leesville Road’s Chris Kimmerly (106) and Matt Cesari (145), Broughton’s Tiu Rahlan (132) and Enloe’s Damien Dozier (195) also qualified.

The last Cap Eight wrestler to win a state individual title was Wakefield’s Eric White, who took the 160-pound class in 2011.

The tournament is scheduled to begin Thursday at the Greensboro Coliseum and run through Saturday’s championship matches.
