Ravenscroft to play in national tournament

Ravenscroft’s boys basketball team will play in the ESPNHS National High School Invitational championship later this month.

Coach Kevin Billerman’s Ravens, which won the NCISAA 3A title, will join seven other teams at Georgetown Preparatory School in Bethesda, Md., in the tournament.

The field includes Henderson (Nev.) Findlay Prep; Newark (N.J.)St. Benedict’s Prep; Rockville (Md.) Montrose Christian; Montverde (Fla.) Academy; La Porte (Ind.) La Lumiere; Pompano Beach (Fla.) Blanche Ely and Washington (D.C) Coolidge.

Quarterfinal games will be played at 2 p.m., 4 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Thursday, March 29.

The semifinals will be played on ESPN2 at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

The championship game will air on ESPN on March 31 at 2 p.m. March 30.

“I told our players on the first day of practice that if they worked hard and were 100 percent committed to each other and the team, this would be a special season,” Billerman said in a statement.

“We reached our ultimate goal of winning the state championship, but having the chance to represent Ravenscroft and the state of North Carolina at the NHSI is just the icing on the cake,” he said.

N.C. High School Athletic Association teams are not eligible to play in post-season tournaments.
