N.C. State University plans to establish a scholarship in the name of three family members who attended the university and were shot to death in Chapel Hill last week.
Chancellor Randy Woodson announced the “Our Three Winners” scholarship Friday in honor of Deah Barakat, who graduated in 2013 and was attending the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Dentistry; Yusor Abu-Salha, a 2014 NCSU graduate who was to start at the dental school this year; and Razan Abu-Salha, a sophomore in the College of Design majoring in architecture.
Barakat and Yusor Abu-Salha were married. Razan Abu-Salha was her sister.
“Deah, Yusor and Razan exemplified the best of N.C. State and will forever serve as role models for our student body,” Woodson said in a statement. “Each was not only an outstanding student, but individually and as a family lived their lives bringing joy to others, helping those in need and making the world a better place.”
The three students helped feed the homeless in Durham and Raleigh and were involved in building an interfaith Habitat for Humanity home in Wake County. At the time of his death, Barakat was trying to raise $20,000 through a YouCaring.com website ( nando.com/xk) to pay for a trip to Turkey to provide dental care for Syrian refugees; the campaign has received more than $469,000 in donations, to benefit the Syrian-American Medical Society.
The three were shot to death in a condominium in Chapel Hill on Feb. 10. Craig Stephen Hicks, who lived in the same complex, has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder.
NCSU says it created the endowment to fund the scholarship with advice from family members. It will provide annual support to students in NCSU’s Poole College of Management, College of Sciences and College of Design.
The university seeded the fund with $60,000 but hopes to raise much more through private donations.
