Photo essay competition

The Cary Photographic Artists will sponsor a photo essay competition for Wake County high school students. Cash prizes range from $50 to $150, and the competition will end with an exhibit. To enter, choose one of four themes: “America to Me,” “Home Town Pride,” “Student Life” or “Our Natural World.” Send four images for your theme and a paragraph relating your photography to the theme to cpaoutreach@gmail.com by Thursday, Jan. 15. • The City of Raleigh and Capital Area Transit (CAT) seek original designs from artists living, attending school or working in Wake County. Selected artists will receive a $1,000 honorarium, and their work will be displayed on CAT buses for six months. The application deadline is Oct. 24.



• The N.C. Arts Council is accepting applications for the 2014-15 Artist Fellowship awards for songwriters, composers and writers. The award is $10,000. The application deadline is Nov. 3.



• The National Arts Program’s Block Gallery is accepting submissions from city of Raleigh and Wake County employees and their families. The deadline is Nov. 14.



Grant workshops

The city of Raleigh awards grant funding annually to nonprofit groups. Grants will support arts programming that runs from July 1, 2015, through June 30, 2016. Applications are due by Monday, Jan. 5. As part of the application process, organizations must attend one of two informational grant workshops scheduled in November. Any organization interested in applying for an Innovation Grant must also attend the workshop for that grant category.

Seating is limited at the workshops, so organizations planning to attend must notify Arts Grant Coordinator Sarah Corrin at sarah.corrin@raleighnc.gov or 919-996-4686.

• 10 to 11:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 10: The workshop for currently funded organizations will be at Halifax Community Center, 1023 Halifax St., Raleigh.



• 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14: The workshop for new applicants will be at the Halifax Community Center, 1023 Halifax St., Raleigh.



• 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21: The Innovation Grant workshop will be at the Halifax Community Center, 1023 Halifax St., Raleigh. The session is mandatory for anyone applying for the Innovation Grant.



Arts at N.C. State

N.C. State University holds arts programs throughout the year. For more information on these programs, visit ncsu.edu/arts.

7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30:

The Music Department Wind Ensemble will present Daniel Bukvich’s “Voodoo” in Titmus Theatre in Thompson Hall on NCSU’s main campus. Tickets are $8-10, $5 for NCSU students, or free for children under 12 with adult.



• Through Oct. 30: The R.A. Bryan Foundation, Inc. Crafts Center hosts the work of NCSU students who participated in the 6th annual Pinhole Camera Challenge on NCSU’s main campus. Visit ncsu.edu/crafts/calendar.html for hours.

• 

5 and 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1:

Chilean guitarist Nano Stern will perform in Titmus Theatre in Thompson Hall on NCSU’s main campus. Tickets are $26, or $5 for students.

Through Nov. 1:

The exhibition “Peacefully Wild” by Cheryl Weisz will be on display at the R.A. Bryan Foundation, Inc. Gallery and Crafts Center in Thompson Hall on NCSU’s main campus. Visit

4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2:

The Raleigh Civic Chamber Orchestra will perform in Titmus Theatre in Thompson Hall on NCSU’s main campus. Tickets are $8-10, or $5 for NCSU students and Alumni Association members.



• 

9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday Through Feb. 6:

“Smokes and Mirrors: Reflections of the Self in Photographs” by John Menapace is on display at the Historic Chancellor’s Residence, 1903 Hillsborough St., Raleigh. Admission is free.



Call for artists

• The Cotton Company in historic downtown Wake Forest is seeking a variety of artists and musicians for Art After Hours. The event, which takes place the second Friday of each month, allows local artists and musicians to display their work, network and sell to the public. The Cotton Company is now accepting applications for 2015. For details, email TheCottonCompanyGallery@gmail.com.



Renaissance Centre events

The Wake Forest Renaissance Centre hosts events at 405 S. Brooks St., Wake Forest. For details and ticket information, go to wakeforestnc.gov.

• The Renaissance Centre will commemorate its first year with “Another Evening with Marcus Anderson” at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1. The event will include Anderson’s performance, a buffet dinner and a cash bar. Tickets are $35 in advance or $40 the day of the event.



• Tickets are now on sale for the Murder Mystery Dinner Theater “Totally 80’s, Totally Murder” on Saturday, Nov. 8. Designed for ages 8 and older, the crime-solving theatrical production costs $35, or $30 for advance tickets. Doors open at 6:15 p.m., with dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the show at 7 p.m.



Family ties

The works of Marriott Little and her family (Marriott Sheldon, Corneille Little, Stan Mallard, Will Sheldon, George Bason III and the late Bill Little) will be featured throughout November at Roundabout Art Collective, 305 Oberlin Road, Raleigh. For details, go to www.roundaboutartcollective.com.

N.C. State University Theatre

N.C. State University Theatre will present shows for its 2014-15 season. Season tickets cost $62; $58 for senior citizens, NCSU faculty and staff, alumni association members, parent association members and students; and $48 for NCSU students. Pick three shows for $48. Individual tickets cost $16-$18.

“Around the World in 80 Days”

by Laura Eason, adapted from the novel by Jules Verne, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. weeknights and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays, Nov. 7-9, 12-16 and 19-23, at Kennedy-McIlwee Studio Theatre, Frank Thompson Hall.

“The Little Shop of Horrors”

by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman will be presented at 7:30 p.m. weeknights and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays, Feb. 12-15 and 18-22, at Titmus Theatre, Frank Thompson Hall.



• 

“The Burial at Thebes, a version of Sophocles’ Antigone”

will be presented at 7:30 p.m. March 27-29, and April 8-12 and 15-19 at Kennedy-McIlwee Studio Theatre, Frank Thompson Hall.
