Mark Schachte scored on a layup off an assist from Nick Forbes with 1 minute, 3 seconds remaining as Cardinal Gibbons (10-5, 5-0 Big 8) finished with a 7-0 run to beat Cedar Ridge 39-34 on Friday night.
In a turnover plagued, poor shooting game, the Crusaders’ Justin Reid led all scorers with 16 points. The Red Wolves’ Peyton Pappas, who averages 25.1 points, was held to 14 on 6-of-19 shooting, including 1-of-11 from 3-point range. Cedar Ridge’s Kyle Jones finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Pappas’ layup with 1:52 remaining gave Cedar Ridge (9-7, 3-3) a 34-32 lead. After Schachte’s layup, Logan Bugg hit a free-throw to give the Crusaders’ a 37-34 lead. On its final possession, Pappas attempted a three-pointer despite being double-teamed, but it clanked off the side of the rim.
Cedar Ridge was held to only 11 points in the second half, and just four Red Wolves scored. Blane Beason added 11 for Gibbons, who remain atop the Big 8 Conference.

Neither team had more than a 7-point lead in the game as both defenses were focused on the leading scorers for their respective sides – Pappas for Cedar Ridge, and Reid for Gibbons. Reid averages 21.5 points and was held to 4-of-11 shooting from the field. However, Reid drained two critical free throws in the waning seconds to put the game away.
In the girls game, Cardinal Gibbons defeated Cedar Ridge 58-36. The Crusaders are 12-3, 4-1 in the Big 8.
