A man has been charged with first-degree murder after Johnston County sheriff’s deputies found the body of his stepfather on Wednesday.
Authorities found the body of Gilbert Ray Stanley, 62, near Thomas Road and N.C. 96 in the Blackmon’s Crossroads community at about 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, Sheriff Steve Bizzell said.
Stanley had been missing since Monday night, when sheriff’s deputies responded to a call about a possible shooting at 8068-B Strickland’s Cross Roads Road near Four Oaks around 9:45 p.m. Deputies found evidence that someone had been injured there, but were unable to locate the victim or a suspect.
The sheriff’s office arrested Brandon Lee Slade, 37, of Blackmon’s Crossroads in connection with the shooting after he surrendered Tuesday. Slade was initially charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and inflicting serious injury and with possessing a firearm in violation of a protection order.
Slade was charged with first-degree murder after the body was found. He is currently being held without bail, said sheriff’s office spokeswoman Tammy Amaon.
Investigators have not said what might have prompted the shooting. Slade’s mother took out a restraining order against him on Nov. 7.
Stanley’s body will be transported to the office of the chief medical examiner in Raleigh for an autopsy, the sheriff’s office reported.
