Job-skills training

Johnston Community College has scheduled the following job-skills classes, which are free to the jobless, the working poor and the soon-to-be jobless. For more information, call Danielle Hussey at 919-209-2042.

Basic computer skills – 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Jan. 26-Feb. 11, in the Elsee Building on the Smithfield campus, 245 College Road.

Job Search Using Technology – 9 a.m . to 3 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Feb. 16-25, in the Elsee Building on the Smithfield campus.

Personal and Home Care Aide – 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, Feb. 2-May 11, at the Johnston County Workforce Development Center, 135 Bestwood Drive, Clayton. Learn home management, persona-care tasks and CPR.

Computers

Johnston Community College has scheduled the following computer classes. To register for a class, call 919-209-2522.

MS Word Certification – 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Feb. 3-26, at the Johnston County Workforce Development Center, 135 Bestwood Drive, Clayton. Topics in this word-processing class include formatting documents; using and creating templates; designing tables, charts and graphs within Word; organizing and sorting data in tables; inserting graphics; editing; saving; and printing from application. The fee is $73.

MS Excel Certification – 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, March 3-26, at the Johnston County Workforce Development Center, 135 Bestwood Drive, Clayton. Topics in this spreadsheet class include editing, viewing and printing worksheets; working with formulas and functions; formatting the contents of cells; changing the appearance of worksheets; and charting worksheet data. The fee is $73.

MS PowerPoint Certification 2010 – 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, April 7-23, at the Johnston County Workforce Development Center. Topics in this class include creating and delivering a presentation; designing the presentation; and adding graphics, animation and sound. The fee is $72.

Continuing education

Johnston Community College will offer a number of continuing education classes starting in January. In some cases, financial assistance is available for those who qualify, and job placement is possible after the class ends. To learn more, call Rachel Wooten at 919-209-2591.

Plumbing – 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, Jan. 26-April 23, in the Elsee Building on the Smithfield campus, 245 College Road.

Developing a Lifelong Trade Manufacturing Program – 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, Jan. 26-April 15, at the Johnston County Workforce Development Center, 135 Bestwood Drive, Clayton.

Real Estate Pre-Licensing Course – 6:30-9:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, Jan. 26-April 22, at the Johnston County Workforce Development Center. The cost is $180, and a textbook is required. Pre-testing is also required.

Wastewater Treatment Operator I and II Certification – 6-10 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 29-May 7, at the Johnston County Workforce Development Center. The cost is $180, and a textbook is required.

Manicurist class

A manicurist class will begin Feb. 16 in Room C1116 in the Wilson Building at Johnston Community College, 245 College Road, Smithfield.
