People who are suffering from arthritis now have a specialist close to home.
Dr. Anshul M. Rao of Clayton, a rheumatologist, is seeing adult patients at offices in the Medical Arts Pavilion at Johnston Medical Center in Smithfield and in the Johnston Professional Plaza at Johnston Medical Center in Clayton.
Before coming to work with Johnston Health, Dr. Rao, whose name rhymes with “wow,” was in practice for a year with Wayne Heart and Internal Medicine in Goldsboro. With the move to Johnston County, he says he looks forward to getting more involved in the community where he lives.
Rao noted that more than 50 million Americans have arthritis and that two-thirds of them are under the age of 65. “It’s an epidemic, and it’s going to get worse as our population ages,” he said.

Rao said he likes that the field of rheumatology has changed so dramatically. “A few decades ago, there wasn’t much that we could do,” he said. “While we don’t have a cure, we do now have disease-altering medications. With treatment, people can maintain and continue their quality of life. And that’s gratifying.”
Rao is a graduate of the University of Toledo Medical College. In 2012, he completed a fellowship in rheumatology at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, and, in 2009, an internal medicine residency at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
Rao thinks it’s important that patients understand their diagnoses so that they can help him make decisions about their treatment. “I expect and need the patient to be fully invested,” he said. “There are a myriad of options, and all of them have merit.”
Rao was born in India. When he was 2, his parents moved to the United States. His mother is a pediatrician, and his father is a business executive.
Rao said that he and his wife, who is a business analyst for an insurance company, chose to live in the Southeast because of the mild climate and green landscapes. “Clayton is such a nice area, and it’s close to downtown Raleigh, the beach and not far from cities such as Savannah and Richmond.”
