The South Johnston Optimist Club recently welcomed Trish Verne, district chairman of the Optimist Childhood Cancer Campaign.

The focus of the campaign is to provide support to children with cancer and their families and to care partners. Also, the campaign supports childhood cancer research through Johns Hopkins University. Verne presented some facts on childhood cancer:

Verne displayed many simple things that can made for children at Duke, Chapel Hill and Greenville, including pillowcases, therapy dolls, blankets and hats. New toys such as stuffed animals and doctor kits are also fun for the children, he said.

Verne explained the Kisses for Cancer fundraiser and a project already adopted by the club – recycling pop-top tabs for the Ronald McDonald House.
