A former Wake County teacher charged in February with having sex with a student now faces a similar charge in Johnston County, where he was a teacher last year.
The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office charged Ronald Lee Chewning of Hidden Dove Lane in Raleigh was charged with one felony count of indecent liberties with a minor. Chewning, 25, was arrested in Guilford County.
Sheriff’s investigators launched an investigation Feb. 12 following reports that Chewning had inappropriate contact with a student last March at the Johnston County public school where he worked. Sheriff’s Capt. Chris Strickland would not disclose the school or other details because the case involves a minor and the sheriff’s office investigation is not complete.
Investigators think the crime occurred last year on March 5, state records show.
Chewning was scheduled to appear March 2 in a Wake County courtroom after Raleigh police charged him with one felony count of a sex offense involving a female student.
Investigators have not said where they think that incident took place, but Chewning was working at Broughton High School as a career and technical education teacher when police think it occurred on Dec. 1.
The Wake County Public Schools hired Chewning last August; he resigned three days before his arrest in Raleigh on Feb. 6, school officials reported.
