Concert in Clayton
Chic Gamine will perform at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, at The Clayton Center, 111 E. Second St., Clayton. The quartet recently released its debut U.S. album, “Closer.”
Roughly translated, Chic Gamine means a stylish, mischievous young thing. National Public Radio has described the group’s style as “minimal Motown,” and the quartet has opened for Smokey Robinson and played in a lineup that featured Mavis Staples.
In Canada, the group’s debut album won a Juno Award for Best Roots Album of 2009.

Tickets for Chic Gamine are $20. They’re available online at www.theclaytoncenter.com, by phone at 919-553-1737 and in the box office, which is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
American Music Jubilee

Art class for toddlers
Doodlebugs, an art class for children from 18 months to 3 years, meets from 9:30-10:15 a.m. Fridays at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center, 600 Booker Dairy Road, Smithfield. Children experiment with dough, pudding, gelatin, crayons, watercolors and more. For Smithfield residents, the cost is $5 per session or $19 for four sessions. Art in Clayton
Artwork by Carolyn Howard and Amy Devereaux of Clayton and Medrith Nuttle of Zebulon is on display this month at the The Clayton Center, 111 E. Second St. Howard works in mixed media, Devereaux in photography and Nuttle in acrylic on canvas. The exhibit will run through October. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
‘Porsche by Design’
The Fine Art Department at Johnston Community College invites Johnstonians to travel to Raleigh on Oct. 29 for an exhibit at the N.C. Museum of Art. “Porsche by Design” features 20 automobiles owned by Ralph Lauren, Steve McQueen, Janis Joplin and others.
The trip will depart JCC at 9 a.m. and return before 3 p.m. The transportation cost is $15 at the ticket booth and $16 online at www.johnstoncc.edu/performingarts. Exhibit admission, payable at the museum, is $18 for adults, $15 for military personnel and adults 55 and older and $12 for ages 7-18.
