Girl Scout receives Gold Award
Valerie Brianna Davis of Smithfield earned the Gold Award, Girl Scouting’s highest achievement.
For her Gold Award project, Davis organized an Ultimate lunch group at her school to promote fun and fitness through the flying disc sport. The daughter of Randy and Rhonda Davis, she is a senior at Smithfield-Selma High School. Davis joined Girl Scouting in 2000 and is in Troop 1863, led by Rhonda Davis and Dottie Freeman.
Student attends Naval Academy seminar

Cory S. LaFollette, a rising senior at West Johnston High School, is taking part this week in the U.S. Naval Academy’s Summer Seminar program. The program helps educate, motivate and prepare students who are thinking about applying for admission to Naval Academy.
Seminar students attend workshops on subjects such as seamanship, navigation and oceanography. They also take part in daily physical training and a Navy Yard Patrol cruise.
Juniors to compete in Angus show
Riley Wood, Mary Elaine Wood and Justin Wood, all of Willow Spring, will exhibit Angus cattle at the 2013 National Junior Angus Show July 5-11 at the American Royal Complex, Kansas City, Mo.
They are junior members of the American Angus Association and a few of the 741 young Angus breeders from 33 states who have entered a total of 1,599 head in the show. It’s sponsored by the American Angus Association and National Junior Angus Association.
