Michelina Christine Sharek, known to all of her friends and family as “Mikki”, was born August 12, 1926 in Utica, NY. She passed away, surrounded by her family, on Monday, May 26, 2014 in Smithfield. Mikki is preceded in death by her parents, Anthony and Adele Bevilacqua, brothers Patrick and Anthony, and her loving husband of 55 years, Clement William Sharek. She leaves behind one brother, Robert (wife Joyce) of Florida; three children, Debbie Jacobs (husband “Jake”) of Smithfield, NC, Lisa Deans (husband Frank) of Greeneville, TN, and Bill Sharek (wife Shirley) of Smithfield, NC; eight grandchildren, Courtney Scott (husband Daniel) of Wilsons Mills, NC, Brittany Naylor (husband Jayson) of Smithfield, NC, Scott Deans of Raleigh, NC, Ashley Deans of Raleigh, NC, Brian Wilson (wife Lori) of Wake Forest, NC, Rodney Wilson (fiancée Alice) of Cary, NC, Bryan Sharek (wife Amber) of Four Oaks, NC, and Christopher Sharek of Smithfield, NC and 19 great grandchildren.
Mikki graduated from Thomas R. Procter High School, Utica, NY, in June 1944 where she was a member of the National Honor Society. After high school graduation, she attended Russell Sage College, Troy, NY, and graduated cum laude in June 1948 with a BS in Nursing. She was listed as a member of Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. At college, she met the love of her life, Clem. She completed her nursing board exams and became a licensed Registered Professional Nurse in 1948. During her nursing career, she was employed as a psychiatric nurse, regional public health nurse, pediatric nurse, and after being a full time homemaker and mother from 1953-1967, returned to the work force as the Public Health Coordinator for Johnston County Community Action. Her final employment was as the Public Health Nurse Coordinator at Johnston County Health Department from 1969-1991. She established the Pap Cancer Detection Clinic at the Health Department and trained new nurses statewide in Pap Clinic services.
Mikki was a long time, active member of First Presbyterian Church, Smithfield, NC. She served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Johnston County Cancer Society, on the NC Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society and as a member of the Pines of Carolina Girl Scouts Board of Directors. She was a Girl Scout leader for ten years and the volunteer nurse at Camp Mary Atkinson Girl Scout camp for many summers. Mikki organized and supervised the Candy Striper program for Johnston County Memorial Hospital. She was a past member of the JMH Women’s Auxiliary and the Smithfield Junior Women’s Club.
A celebration of life service was held on Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church-Smithfield. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the First Presbyterian Church-Smithfield Building Fund.
