Smithfield-Selma hoops teams both open season 2-0

Smithfield-Selma’s boys basketball team opened its season with back-to-back wins over West Johnston and Southern Wayne on Monday and Tuesday nights.

SSS stopped West, 67-59, with three players scoring 14 or more points. Sophomore D.J. Williams led the Spartans with 17 points, while Malik Frazier and Raequan Smith added 14 each.

Junior Ryan Holmes had 26 for West in the loss.

SSS beat Southern Wayne 65-63 on Tuesday behind a 26-point night from Smith. Williams added 18.

The Spartan girls team beat West 60-48 in its season opener and came back a night later to nip Southern Wayne, 56-53. Senior Diamond Blackston had 15 points in the win over the Wildcats, while fellow senior Dazmine Young added 13.

Blackston and Young paced the Spartan offense again against Southern Wayne. Blackston had 24 on 8-of-14 shooting from the field and Young added 13.

North girls drop Midway

North Johnston’s girls basketball team opened its season with a 57-45 win over Midway on Tuesday. Jahkira Blue led the Panthers with 13 points, while Tangela Williams added an even dozen points. Midway’s boys stopped North, 60-39.

Pair of Corinth Holders standouts win two events

Corinth Holders swimming standouts Connor Blandford and Michaela Carter won two events in a quad meet with Apex, Middle Creek and Holly Springs on Monday.

Blandford won the boys 200-yard individual medley and the 100 backstroke. Carter won the 50 free and the 100 back.

The Pirate boys team finished second in the meet and the girls team was fourth. Corinth Holders was second in the 200 free relay for boys. Ashley Heinemann was the runner-up in the girls 200 free.
