USGA Rules of Golf Seminars
The Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) will hold its annual USGA Rules of Golf seminars in March. Area seminars will be held on March 11 at Hope Valley Country Club in Durham and on March 18 at Carolina Country Club in Raleigh. The seminars are free of charge to attendees, who will view a narrated computer presentation on the basics of the Rules of Golf followed by question and answer sessions. Seminars typically last between two hours. A free 2012-15 USGA Rules of Golf book will be distributed to all participants, and information on the Carolinas Golf Association will be available. Adult baseball league in Triangle
The Central North Carolina Men’s Senior Baseball League is holding tryouts at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7, at the KZone Academy in Apex. The league is made up of 20+/30+/40+/50+ age divisions. Johnston County CCA Banquet set
The Johnston County chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association will be held at 6 p.mm. on Thursday, Feb. 5, at The Farm at Springhill Outfitters (215 Batten Road, Selma). Red Cross Lifeguard Training
Four sessions of American Red Cross Lifeguard Training will be held at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center. Participants must be at least 15 years old, pass a pre-course swim test and attend all class sessions in full. The pre-course swim test includes a 300-yard swim with rhythmic breathing and breath control using freestyle or the breaststroke, a two-minute water tread using only your legs, and a distance swim after retrieving a brick in nine feet of water. The fee for the pre-course is $25. The class fee is $175-200. Classes are set for four days (including 20 hours of instruction) from March 1-9, March 22-29, April 26 - May 3 and May 11-17. 2015 Horse Show Series
The Johnston County Horse Show Series offers fun and exciting shows while still maintaining a down home atmosphere that encourages family participation. The shows, mostly held at the Johnston County Livestock Arena near Smithfield, are open shows that welcome riders and horses/mules from all riding levels, breeds and disciplines. JCHSS offers classes in Halter, Western, Working Western, Hunters & Jumping, Dressage Suitability, Trail, Miniature equines, Driving and English. Classes are placed through eighth place with 21 championship divisions per show. Show dates for 2015 are April 11, May 31, June 27, Sept. 19, Oct. 31 and Nov. 14. A three-day show is also set for Aug. 7-9 at the Hunt Horse Complex in Raleigh. A negative coggins test within one year is required. Fly-fishing clinics planned
The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will offer basic fly-fishing clinics Jan. 31, and Feb. 14 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the John E. Pechmann Fishing Education Center ponds in Fayetteville. The Wildlife Commission designed the clinics for participants who have limited or no experience fly fishing. Instructors will teach the basics of fly-casting. They also will teach multiple fly-casting techniques, including on-the-water instruction. Two additional clinics for Boy Scouts who want to earn fly-fishing merit badges are scheduled for Feb. 28 and March 14. Clinics are limited to 30 people each, and registration at www.ncwildlife.org/learning is required. A registration fee of $5 for each participant will be collected the morning of the clinic by the Fayetteville Cumberland County Parks and Recreation Department.
