Panthers finish third in conference championships

North Johnston athletes brought home five conference championships and a pair of third-place finishes from the Eastern Plains 2A Conference Winter Track and Field Championships at North Pitt Wednesday.

The Panthers had three individual girls conference champions. Host North Pitt swept the team titles.

North Johnston’s Quasheila Thorne won the 300 meters title in 46.8 seconds. In the field events, Marshea Jones took the shot put with a throw of 24 feet, nine inches and Morgan Foster won the high jump at 4-2.

Dylan Pinder, a former state champ for the Panthers, won the wheelchair shot put and the wheelchair 55 meters.

The Panthers’ girls relay teams had a great afternoon. The 800 relay team (Kaylee Jones, Jakara Burns, Meghan Sherrod and Quasheila Thorne) and the 1,600 relay team (

Cassidy Goodwin, Burns, Sherrod and Thorne) both finished in the runner-up positions.

North’s 3,200 relay team — Faith Bowen, Abby Bass, Genesis Vigil, Kasey Winstead — finished third.

Tanner Gibson took second place in the boys 300 for North Johnston and teammate Andrew Daughtry tied for third in the high jump.

The Panthers had four individual bronze medalists in girls events: Taylor Woodard in the shot put, Jones in the 500, Bowen in the 1,600 and Sherrod in the long jump.
