Yellow Jackets Flag Football
Selma Parks and Recreation is offering an instructional program that is designed to teach the fundaments of football for children between the ages of 5-6 (as of 8/1/13). Practices will begin in August with games starting after Labor Day. Registration fees are $25-30. Register by June 21.
Yellow Jackets Cheerleading
Girls ages 6 - 12 (as of Aug. 1) can join the cheerleading squad to cheer at Yellow Jackets football games. Squads will practice starting in beginning of August and cheer at games starting end of August. A $50 refundable uniform deposit is required before participants can receive their equipment and uniform. Registration fees are $25-30 (includes bloomers and socks). Register by June 21.

Fall Soccer Registration
Youth recreational soccer league for boys and girls ages 4-14 (as of Aug. 1) is offered by the Selma Parks Dept. This program focuses on the fundamentals of soccer and developing the future player’s team skills. Players will practice middle of August with games starting after Labor Day. Registration fees are $25-30. Register by June 21.
Youth Girls Volleyball
Selma Parks and Recreation will be offering a youth Volleyball League this fall for girls in grades 4-6. Practice will start in the middle of September and games will begin the last week of September. Registration fees are $25-30. Register by Aug. 16.
Thunder Basketball Camp
This co-ed basketball camp from June 17-19 and 8 a.m. until noon daily will focus on basketball fundamentals and skill improvement for ages 7-15. The cost is $40 per camper, register by June 3.
Harrison Gym open play
Practice your moves, meet your friends, stay active and spend time with your family at the Harrison Gymnasium. Drop in for basketball with no reservations necessary. The court is available on a first-come, first-served basis. You must sign in each time and present a photo ID. Play for ages 18 and over is available Sundays from 4-6 p.m. The cost is $3 per person. Play for ages 55 and older is available on Fridays from 6-8 p.m. There is no charge for the Friday session.
Challenger Sports Soccer Camp: June 17-21
The Selma Parks and Recreation Department has teamed up with Challenger Sports to provide a soccer camp for ages 6 -16. Camp will take place from 5-8 p.m. at Selma Middle School and the cost is $111 per person. Register online at challengersports.com by May 3 and receive a free soccer jersey.

Three Little Pigs Triathlon
The fourth annual Three Little Pigs Triathlon will be held June 15 in Smithfield. Races begin at 7:30 a.m. The race includes a 250-yard swim, a 14-mile bike ride and a 5K run. The swim is in the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center, the bike ride takes you into rural Johnston County and the run is through Smithfield Community Park and onto the Buffalo Creek Greenway. Registration is $40-60 for individuals or $80-120 for relay teams, depending on the time of registration. A fee from $5-10 for USAT race day insurance will be added to the registrations of non-USAT members. Registration is online at fsseries.com until June 12. On-site registration will be available if the field is not full. Last year’s race included nearly 500 competitors.
Basketball Camp for ages 5-7
A basketball camp will be held June 12-14 for ages 5-7 from 9-11 a.m. at the SRAC gym. The cost is $40 and payable to camp director James Robinson.
Southern Johnston All-Star Baseball Tournament
One of the region’s largest and most popular youth recreational All-Star baseball tournaments will be held June 19-24 in Johnston County, the 12th annual Southern Johnston Baseball Association Invitational All-Star Tournament. The tourney, which is not for travel teams, is based at Smithfield Community Park but typically includes games played in Wilson’s Mills, Four Oaks and/or Selma. There are spots for 20 teams in each of the four age divisions: coach-pitch (ages 7-8), midget league (9-10), little league (11-12) and junior league (13-14). The entry fee is $200 per team and all teams are guaranteed a minimum of three games. Entry packets are available online Smithfield-nc.com. Cheerleading camps for grades 1-5 and 6-12 will be held twice this summer. Camp for grades 6-12 is from 9 a.m. until noon, June 24-26 and July 22-24 and costs $70 per session. Camp for grades 1-5 is from 10 a.m. until noon, June 27-28 and July 25-26 and costs $35. Camps are held at the SRAC gym and payments are to Jessica Brank.
Spartans’ Football Camp
Spartans’ football camp for ages 6-14 will be held June 13-14 from 9 a.m. until noon daily at the Smithfield-Selma High practice field. The cost is $35 per camper and payable to David Lawhon.
Tennis camps for ages 5-7 and 8-14 will be held June 24-26 and/or July 22-24. Camp for ages 5-7 runs from 6-7 p.m. and 8-14 camp is from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the Smithfield Community Park tennis courts. The cost is $30 for ages 5-7 or $50 for ages 8-14, payable to Doug Simmons.
Basketball camp for ages 7-14
A basketball camp for ages 7-14 will be held June 17-20 from 9 a.m. until noon daily at the SRAC gym. The cost is $65 before the first day of camp or $75 on the first day of camp and payable to James Robinson.
River Rats Running Club
A Smithfield-based running Smithfield meets on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. at the large picnic shelter in Smithfield Community Park. There is a $20 fee which includes a club T-shirt. This is a club for beginners as well as seasoned runners; any and all ages are welcome. Some runs will be short, some runs will be long, and some will be timed. Bring your running goals whether they are a 5K, 10K, or marathon. All runs will be followed by a light stretch or cool down. A soccer camp for ages 5-14 is July 15-18 at Smithfield Community Park from 8:30 until 11:30 a.m. daily. The cost is $50 and payable to Steve Brush.
Spartans’ Baseball Camp
The Spartans’ baseball camp for ages 7-16 is July 8-11 and from 9 a.m. until noon daily at Spartan Field on the SSS campus. The cost is $75 per camper and payable to Chase Crocker.
A volleyball camp for girls ages 8-14 is set for July 8-11 in the SRAC gym from 9 a.m. until noon daily. The cost is $60 and payable to Kim Smith.
Spartans’ Softball Camp
Spartans’ Softball Camp for girls ages 7-16 is July 15-18 at Smithfield Community Park from 9 a.m. until noon daily. The camp costs $60 and is payable to Britney Smith.
