The Wendell 14U All Stars outscored their opponents by a total of 36-6 en route to winning the Southern Johnston Baseball Association tournament, held at Smithfield Community Park June 21-24.

In the championship game, Wendell hurlers Geradel Hernandez, Quez Holden, Justin Torres and Peyton Creech combined for a three-hitter in a 13-3 win over the Zebulon All Stars.

The Wendell team finished with 12 hits in the game, and was led by Torres (2-2), Holden (2-3), Hernandez (2-3), Will Davis (2-3), Peyton Creech (1-3), Ben Tilley (1-2), Austin Vernon (1-3) and Hunter Creech (1-3).

Davis Cockrell pitched a complete, 7-inning game and allowed only one hit as Wendell won its second game of the tournament 5-0 over Johnston County.

The Wendell bats weren’t as hot as they were in other games of the tournament – the team finished the game with seven hits – but stout defense complemented Cockrell’s pitching enough for the shutout.

Leading batters were Cockrell (3-3), Wellington Guzman (2-2), Vernon (1-1) and Davis (1-2).

Wendell’s first win of the tournament came in the form of an 18-3 blowout of the West Raleigh All Stars. Davis and Vernon combined for a two-hitter from the mound and the team posted nine hits with Davis (3-3), Hernandez (2-3), Tilley (1-2), Hunter Creech (1-2), Tyler Eckert (1-1) and Guzman (1-1) leading the way.

The next stop for Wendell is the Tar Heel Leagues Inc. district tournament, slated for July 9-13.
