The Wendell bats weren’t as hot as they were in other games of the tournament – the team finished the game with seven hits – but stout defense complemented Cockrell’s pitching enough for the shutout.
Leading batters were Cockrell (3-3), Wellington Guzman (2-2), Vernon (1-1) and Davis (1-2).
Wendell’s first win of the tournament came in the form of an 18-3 blowout of the West Raleigh All Stars. Davis and Vernon combined for a two-hitter from the mound and the team posted nine hits with Davis (3-3), Hernandez (2-3), Tilley (1-2), Hunter Creech (1-2), Tyler Eckert (1-1) and Guzman (1-1) leading the way.
The next stop for Wendell is the Tar Heel Leagues Inc. district tournament, slated for July 9-13.
