Fun and Fellowship Softball
Team registration for a Fun and Fellowship softball league with the Smithfield Parks and Recreation Department is open until March 20. Teams will play two games a week on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays or Fridays, beginning in April. The fee is $475 per team. Team packets are now available.
Free tennis clinics
The Smithfield Parks and Recreation Department will offer two free one-hour tennis clinics for ages 5-16 at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 11 (at the Smithfield Community Park tennis courts ) and Saturday, May 9 (at the Smith Collins Park Tennis Courts (502 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive). Smithfield-Selma High school tennis coach James Reid will be the lead instructor and racquets will be available to borrow.
American Red Cross Lifeguard Training
Four sessions of American Red Cross Lifeguard Training will be held at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center. Participants must be at least 15 years old, pass a pre-course swim test and attend all class sessions in full. The pre-course swim test includes a 300-yard swim with rhythmic breathing and breath control using freestyle or the breaststroke, a two-minute water tread using only your legs, and a distance swim after retrieving a brick in nine feet of water. The fee for the pre-course is $25. The class fee is $175-200. Classes are set for four days (including 20 hours of instruction) from March 1-15, March 22-29, April 26 - May 3 and May 11-17. Be a Smithfield Tadpole
Smithfield Tadpoles gives kids and their parents an opportunity to swim in the splash pool at 10 a.m. on Wednesdays. Play groups are welcome and additional activities are offered for the kids as well. The price is $5 for one parent and tadpole and $3 for each additional tapdole. Co-ed church softball league
The Selma Parks and Recreation Department will hold a summer co-ed church softball league on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings. A double-elimination tournament will be held to conclude the season. The team fee is $375. Register by April 10.
Youth Tennis Play Day
Youth tennis play days are designed to introduce kids to competition in a low pressure setting for boys and girls ages 6-12. These events provide kids with the opportunity to learn or continue to develop and enhance their skills. For both novices and experience players, Play Days are a welcoming way for kids to experience the social and competitive aspects of tennis. Play days are set for April 18, May 16, June 20, July 18, Aug. 15 and Sept. 19. The fees are $15-20. Register by April 10.
Johnston County Senior Games registration opens
Registration for the Johnston County Senior Games is open until March 13. The Games will be held April 13-24. The games are a health and fitness program for ages 50 and older with 30 athletic events (including cycling, corn-hole, pickelball, track & field, walking, bowling, bocce, golf and more). The competition also includes the Silver Arts (visual including acrylics, drawing, photography), Heritage arts (quilting, knitting, needlework), Literary arts (essays, poems, short stories, life experiences) and Performing arts (comedy/drama, vocal, dance, instrumental). Free MLB Pitch, Hit and Run Competition
A free Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run will be held from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday, April 18, at Clayton Community Park Field No. 3. Boys and girls (competing separately) in ages 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14 (as of July 17) will have the opportunity to compete in the first of four levels of competition. Tennis for ages 10-and-under
Quick Start Tennis is specifically designed for children under 10 to learn the basics of tennis such as hand-eye coordination, footwork and racquet control. A six-week run of lessons on Tuesdays will be held at Clayton Community Park. Ages 5-7 train from 6 until 6:45 p.m.; ages 8-10 from 7 until 7:45 p.m. The new session starts March 17. The fee is $40-55.
Beginner tennis lessons
No experience required beginner tennis lessons will be offered at Clayton Community Park for ages 11 and up beginning March 17. Ages 11-15 train from 6:30 until 7:25 p.m. and ages 15 and up play from 7 until 7:45 p.m. for a four-week session. The fee is $30-45.
Intermediate tennis lessons
Those with some tennis playing experience can take intermediate tennis lessons (ages 14 and up) at Clayton Community Park on Thursdays, beginning March 19 for a four-week run. The cost is $35-50.
Clayton Community Center Memberships
Memberships for use of the Clayton Community Center are available through the Clayton Parks and Recreation Department for residents of the Town of Clayton and non-residents. Non-residents rates vary from $50-160 yearly (depending on ages/numbers of family members), $8-20 monthly or $6-10 monthly. Residents fees are only $5 per year.
