2015 Red Devils Youth Football

Registration for youth football with the Smithfield Red Devils is open until July 17 for boys ages 6-12. The Red Devils play in the Johnston County Youth Football League in age groups 6-8, 9-10 and 11-12 as of Aug. 1, 2015. Games will begin in September on Saturday mornings and some weeknights. Practices begin the week of Aug. 10. The fee is $40-80.

2015 Red Devis Youth Cheerleading

Registration for youth cheerleading with the Smithfield Red Devils is open until July 17 for girls ages 5-12. Games will begin in September on Saturday mornings and some weeknights. Practices begin the week of Aug. 10. The fee is $25-50 and participants must purchase a uniform for $60, which will be kept after the season ends.

Smithfield Pickleball

Pickleball will be offered at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center from 2-4 p.m. on Fridays from June 26 through Aug. 7. Non-SRAC members must pay a $2 fee per session. Equipment is provided. Info: Tiffany at 919-934-2148, ext. 112.

Smithfield Family Tennis Day

Smihfield Family Tennis Day, sponsored by the Smithfield Parks Dept. and the Smithfield-Selma High tennis program, will be held June 27 from 9 a.m. until noon at the Smithfield Community Parks Tennis Courts. SSS coach James Reid will provide an introduction to the sport for ages 5-16. There will be racquets to borrow and use, free giveaways and pizza for the participants.

Spartans Baseball Camp

The 2015 Spartans Baseball Camp will be held July 6-8 at Smithfield-Selma High School’s Spartan Field for ages 7-14. Camp is from 9 a.m. until noon daily. Smithfield-Selma coach Mike Sliger will lead the camp staff. The fee is $50 and payable to the SSS Dugout Club.

Champion Youth Outreach Cheering

The Smithfield Parks Dept. and Champion Youth Outreach are offering cheerleading classes for beginners to elite level kids, covering recreational all the way up to competitive cheer levels. Classes will be held Mondays at the AIG Center Gym. Ages 4-6 are from 6 until 6:45; 7-9 from 6:45 until 7:30; 10-and-up from 7:30 until 8:15. There is an $8 registration fee and $7 per week. Parent/Child Swim Class

The Smithfield Parks and Recreation Department will offer parent and child swim classes this summer. Sessions are set for June 23 until July 2 (at 9 a.m.) and July 14-23 (at 6 p.m.). The class is for children six months to 3 years and a parent must accompany the child in the water. Classes are 30 minutes long and there are four classes in each session. The fee is $30-40.

SRAC Sharks summer swimming

The Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center Sharks swim team’s season will run through July. The team is open to ages 5-18; participants must be able to swim 25 yards. The cost is $70-85. Practices are held on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 6-7 p.m. for ages 5-10 and 7-8 p.m. for ages 11-18. For more info, 919-934-1408.

Spartans Tennis Camp

The 2015 Spartans Tennis Camp will be held July 13-17 at the Smithfield-Selma High School tennis courts. Camp is open to ages 5-16. Camp for ages 5-10 is from 6-7 p.m. nightly; camp for 11-16s is from 7-8 p.m. The fee is $40. James Reid will lead the camp staff. Checks should be made payable to Reid.

State Wiffle Ball Tournament

Smithfield Softball Camp

The Smithfield Softball Camp will be held June 29 until July 2 from 9 a.m. until noon daily at Smithfield Community Park. Camp is for ages 7-16 and the fee is $60. (Checks made payable to Britney Smith.) Smith, a former SSS softball coach and player, will lead the camp staff.

Spartans Football Camp

The Spartans Football Camp will be held July 13-15 from 6-8 p.m. daily at the Smithfield-Selma High School football practice fields. The fee is $35, made payable to Wes Hill. Hill, the head football coach at SSS, will lead the camp staff. Camp is for ages 6-14.

Smithfield Soccer Camp

The Smithfield Soccer Camp for ages 5-14 is set for July 13-16 from 8:30 until 11 a.m. daily. The fee is $50, payable to Steve Brush. The camp will be held at the Smithfield Community Park soccer fields. Brush, a nationally certified coach, will lead the camp staff, which includes former Barton College players Morgan and Amber Brush.

SRAC Summer Camp

The Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center offers day-long summer camps (8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.) that include art, swimming, sports and outdoor fun. Ages are 5-12. The fee is $100-125 per week. Early drop off (7:30 a.m.) or late pick up (5:30 is an additional $25 per week. Weeks are June 15-19, June 22-26, July 6-10, July 13-17, July 20-24, July 27-31, Aug. 3-7 and Aug. 10-14.

Smithfield Tennis Camps

A tennis camp for ages 5-7 will be held July 29-31 from 6-7 p.m. at the Smithfield Community Park tennis courts. The fee is $30, made payable to Jimmy Jernigan. A camp for ages 8-14 will be held on the same days from 7 until 8:30 p.m. The fee for that age group is $50. Jernigan is a 30-year veteran tennis coach.

Smithfield Volleyball Camp

The annual Smithfield Volleyball Camp for girls ages 8-14 is set for June 29 until July1 from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. daily at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center. The fee is $60. The camp staff will be led by former Clemson University player and area coach Kim Smith.

Be a Smithfield Tadpole

Smithfield Tadpoles gives kids and their parents an opportunity to swim in the splash pool at 10 a.m. on Wednesdays. Play groups are welcome and additional activities are offered for the kids as well. The price is $5 for one parent and tadpole and $3 for each additional tapdole. Aquatics, fitness programs

The Smithfield Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of aquatics classes and fitness programs. Visit or call 934-1408 for more information. The Selma Parks Dept. is offering Zumba classes at the Harrison Center for Active Aging. Thursday night classes are held at 6:30 now until Aug. 27; Monday classes (also at 6:30) run until June 29. The cost is $5 per class. Zumba fuses Latin and international rhythms with tantalizing moves to create a dynamic workout system designed to be easy and fun to do.

Quick Start Tennis

Quick Start Tennis is designed for ages 10 and under to learn the basics of the game: hand-eye coordination, footwork and racquet control. Lessons will be held in six-week sessions at Clayton Community Park. Ages 5-7 are from 6 until 6:45 p.m., and 8-10 from 7 until 7:45 on Tuesdays from July 7 until Aug. 8. The cost is $40-55.

Intermediate tennis lessons

Intermediate tennis classes for ages 14 and up (some experience required) will be held on Thursdays at Clayton Community Park from July 23 until Aug. 10 from 6:30 until 8 p.m.. The cost is $35-50.

Beginner tennis lessons

Beginner tennis classes will be held at Clayton Community Park from July 21 until Aug. 8 for ages 11 and up. Lessons for ages 11-14 will be from 6-7 p.m. on Tuesdays; lessons for ages 15 and up are from 7-8 p.m. The cost is $30-45.

Fall youth sport sign-ups

The Clayton Parks and Recreation Department's fall fast-pitch softball, youth soccer and girls volleyball seasons is now open. Sign-ups close on June 29 or when the group is full. The fee is $25-60.

Coed soccer is offered for ages 4-5 and 6-7) as of July 31. Fast-pitch softball is for the 8U, 10U, 12U and 14U age groups (as of Jan. 1, 2016).

Volleyball will have age groups 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14 (as of Oct. 15). The softball and volleyball teams will travel for games throughout Johnston County and into Wake County for games.

All seasons run from August through October.

Pacers’ Weekly Baseball Camps

Two half-day instructional baseball camps will focus on the fundamentals of the game with college coaches from William Peace University at the East Clayton Community Park in July. The camps will help participants enhance their skills, while going through drills and game situations. A camp for ages 7-10 will be held July 20-24 and a camp for ages 11-14 is July 27-31. Camp runs from 9 a.m. until noon each day. The camp fee is $100 for residents $130 for others.

Exercise classes

The Clayton Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of exercise classes, including Zumba, yoga, pilates, cardio kick and more for all ages. For information on the offerings, times and costs visit online.

Tennis Camps

Two tennis camps with the Clayton Parks and Recreation Department will be held July 27-31 (a Quickstart camp for ages 7-10) and Aug. 3-7 (a camp for ages 11-16) at Clayton Community Park. The camps run from 9 a.m. until noon daily and if a rain day is needed, it will be held on Saturday of that week. The fee is $60 for residents, $75 for others.

Tae Kwon Do

This Tae Kwon Do program for ages 7 and up focuses on self-confidence, discipline and physical fitness. The instructor, Joey Reeder, is an International Tae Kwon Do Federation certified black belt. Regulation uniforms are not mandatory. Testing to advance in belt rank is done for an additional fee. Classes start on the first Tuesday of each month and run from 6-8 p.m. Fees are $25-40.

Clayton Community Center Memberships

Memberships for use of the Clayton Community Center are available through the Clayton Parks and Recreation Department for residents of the Town of Clayton and non-residents. Non-residents rates vary from $50-160 yearly (depending on ages/numbers of family members), $8-20 monthly or $6-10 monthly. Residents fees are only $5 per year.

Volunteers needed

The Clayton Parks Dept. is always looking for volunteers. Opportunities include park beautification, special events and work in our community garden.
