Spring baseball

Spring youth baseball with the Selma Parks and Recreation Dept. will be offered for ages 7-16 (as of May 1). Practices begin in March and games start in April. The fee is $40-50. Register by Feb. 19.

Spring softball

Spring youth softball with the Selma Parks and Recreation Dept. will be offered for ages 7-14 (as of Jan. 1). Practices begin in March and games start in April. The fee is $25-30. Register by Feb. 19.

Youth Basketball Open Gym

The Selma Parks and Recreation Department is offering open gym for boys and girls (grades K-12) at Selma Elementary. The program will focus on skill development and conditioning in all areas of the game of basketball. Grades K-5 will meet from 3-4 p.m., grades 6-8 from 4-5, grades 9-12 from 5-6. Zumba

The Selma Parks and Recreation Dept. offers Zumba classes, which fuses Latin and International rhythms with a dynamic workout session that is fun and easy to do. Classes are at the Harrison Center for Active Aging weekly on Thursdays from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m. The cost is $5 per person.

Youth Baseball

Registration for baseball with the Smithfield Parks and Recreation Department is open through Feb. 12 for boys ages 7-14 (as of May 1). Practices will begin late March with games beginning in April. The fee is $35-77. Forms are available in lobby of the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center.

Youth softball

Registration for girls softball with the Smithfield Parks and Recreation Department is open through Feb. 12 for girls ages 7-12 (as of Jan. 1). Practices will begin in April. The fee is $35-77. Forms are available in lobby of the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center.

T-ball

Registration for T-ball with the Smithfield Parks and Recreation Department will be open Feb. 15 until March 11 for ages 5-6. Players must be 5 years old as of May 1. Practices will begin in April. The fee is $30-66. Forms are available in lobby of the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center.

Kinder basketball

Registration for kinder basketball with the Smithfield Parks and Recreation Department opens Feb. 8 and runs until March 4 for ages 3-4. The programs only meet four times, and is an introduction to the sport of basketball. There will be two sessions per night: Session 1 from 6 until 6:45; and Session 2 from 6:50 until 7:35. Each session can take 15 kids. Play dates are Tuesdays and Thursdays from March 8 unitl March 17. The fee is $20-44.

Fun and fellowship softball

Registration for Fun and Fellowship Softball with the Smithfield Parks and Recreation Department opens Feb. 8 and runs until March 7. Only the first 24 teams that register will be accepted. To be registered, a team must turn in the Team Registration form and pay all fees (spots cannot be held). A coach’s meeting will be held the last week of March and league play will begin in April. Teams should expect to play two games per week, on Mondays, Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. Pick up a packet at SRAC. The registration fee per team is $475.

SRAC summer camp

Registration for Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center summer camps for kids ages 5-12 begins in May. Camp weeks are: June 13-17, June 20-24, June 28-July 1, July 5-8, July 11-15, July 18-22, July 25-29, August 1-5 and August 8-12. Register for one week or all of them; forms will be available in the lobby of SRAC. Children will be responsible for bringing their lunch, two snacks, drinks and a bathing suit. Camp hours are 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Remember – space is limited, so sign up May 1. Camp fees are $100-137.50. (Early drop off and late pick up are available for an additional fee. SRAC LEGO camp

The SRAC will be offering two LEGO camps this summer: July 11-15 and Aug. 1-5. Registration for Lego camps are online at www.playwell.org. The morning session is from 9 until noon for ages 5-7; afternoon session is from 1-4 p.m. for gges 8-12. The camp will be held at SRAC, in the banquet room. A snack will be provided each day. Lifeguard training classes in Smithfield

The Smithfield Parks and Recreation Department will be offering American Red Cross Lifeguard Training this spring. Participants must be at least 15 years old, pass a pre-course swim test, attend 100 percent of the classes in your session, and not mix sessions. The fee is $200-225. (A non-refundable deposit of $25 is due with each application.) Contact the SRAC for swim test requirements.

First Session — Sunday, Feb. 21, 2-4 p.m.; Friday, Feb. 26, 3-8pm; Saturday, Feb. 27, 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.; Sunday, Feb. 28, 1-7 p.m.

Second Session — Sunday, March 13, 2-4 p.m.; Friday, March 18, 3-8 p.m.; Saturday, March 19, 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.; and Sunday, March 20, 1-7 p.m.

Third Session — Sunday, April 17, 2-4 p.m.; Friday, April 23, 3-8 p.m.; Saturday, April 24, 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.; and Sunday, April 25, 1-7 p.m.

Fourth Session — Monday, May 9, 5-7 p.m.; Friday, May 13, 3-8 p.m.; Saturday, May 14, 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.; and Sunday, May 15, 1-7 p.m.

Swim Lessons

The Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center offers swim lessons for individuals with plans catered to the swimmer’s needs. The cost is $45-71.50 for three lessons or $85-121 for five lessons. Group Fitness Classes at the SRAC

Free fitness classes are offered to Smithfield Recreation and Aquatic Center members throughout the week. Classes include water aerobics, cycling, hybrid fitness, Tai Chi, yoga and Zumba. Schedules are available at the SRAC or online at sraconline.com. Day passes are available for purchase for non-SRAC members.

2016 Clayton 5K Road Race

The 2016 Clayton 5K Road Race will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, in downtown Clayton. Awards will go to the first three finishers in six age groups. Ribbons will be awarded to all participants in the 0.1-mile Tot Trot. Register at the Clayton Community Center or online at townofclayton.org. The entry fee is $25 before April 22, $35 from April 23 until May 11 and $40 the day of the race. The Tot Trot fee (ages 6 and under) is $5. For more info, call 919-553-1550.

Exercise classes

The Clayton Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of exercise classes, including Zumba, yoga, pilates, cardio kick and more for all ages. For information on the offerings, times and costs visit townofclaytonnc.org online.

Tae Kwon Do

This Tae Kwon Do program for ages 7 and up focuses on self-confidence, discipline and physical fitness. The instructor, Joey Reeder, is an International Tae Kwon Do Federation certified black belt. Regulation uniforms are not mandatory. Testing to advance in belt rank is done for an additional fee. Classes start on the first Tuesday of each month and run from 6-8 p.m. Fees are $25-40.

Clayton Community Center Memberships

Memberships for use of the Clayton Community Center are available through the Clayton Parks and Recreation Department for residents of the Town of Clayton and non-residents. Non-residents rates vary from $50-160 yearly (depending on ages/numbers of family members), $8-20 monthly or $6-10 monthly. Residents fees are only $5 per year.

Volunteers needed

The Clayton Parks and Recreation Department is always looking for volunteers. Opportunities include park beautification, special events and work in the community garden.
