Clayton’s Michael Lines, Princeton’s Michael Daughtry are regional champs

Clayton advanced five wrestlers to this coming weekend’s NCHSAA State Individual Wrestling Championships from the 4A Mideast Regional in Cary on Sunday.

Leading the way for the Comets was a dominant performance from Michael Lines at 182 pounds. Lines went 4-0 on the way to the regional championship with three first-period wins by pinfall and one via injury default. He downed Panther Creek’s Chad Laska in just 48 seconds in the championship match to move to 51-1 on the season.

Grabbing third place finishes from Clayton were Nick Brown (45-9) at 145 pounds, Trevor Loken at 152 pounds and Christian Prescott at 113.

Prescott beat a familiar foe in the third place match in West Johnston’s Austin Daley. Daley will still advance to the state finals after the 9-3 loss since the top four finishers in each weight class move on to the state finals from each of the regionals across the state.

Taking fourth place finishes and spots in the state championships as well were Clayton’s Deondre James at 132 pounds and West Johnston’s Jonathan Rose at 285 pounds.

Daughtry wins on home mats: Michael Daughtry took home a regional title from the 1A East Wrestling Regional in his home gym Sunday afternoon. The Princeton senior won the 145-pound classification, prevailing in the championship match after Tarboro’s Quadarrius Hopkins bowed out with an injury during the match.

Daughtry will carry a 45-6 record into this weekend’s state championships. He received a bye into the quarterfinals, then win via fall in the semifinals.

Cougars duo moves on: Neuse Charter will also send a pair of wrestlers to the state championships. Bryce Lyons came in third at 220 pounds at the 1A regional at Princeton. He will carry an 18-13 record into the state meet.

Tristan Walloons finished fourth at 285 pounds for the Cougars. He won his 20th match of the season at the regional.

Pair from North Johnston advance: North Johnston’s Tyler Scott and JoJo Richardson advanced to the 2A state championships from the East Regional at Croatan High School. Scott finished third at 152 pounds, taking the consolation final 9-5 over Joey Marker of Dixon. Scott won four matches at regionals, moving his season record to 36-7.

Richardson was fourth at 145 pounds. He is 25-17 on the season.
