Police are searching for a man suspected of forcing his way into a 20-year-old woman’s apartment on Saturday and sexually assaulting her.

The unidentified man followed the woman to her apartment in the Hawthorne at the Parkway complex at about 9 a.m. Saturday, according to police. The man told the woman that her car was damaged, then followed her to her apartment and pushed her inside as she unlocked the door, according to police, who did not detail the assault.

Police describe the suspect as a clean-shaven, light-skinned black man, standing 6 foot 1 inches tall and weighing 200 pounds. He has short black hair and “pronounced green eyes” that could have been altered in color by contact lenses, according to police. The suspect was driving a red or burgundy sport-utility vehicle, according to police.

Cary police ask anyone with information about the crime or the suspect to call the department at 919-469-4012 or Cary Crime Stoppers at 919-460-4636. Crime Stoppers pays up to $2,500 for information that leads to an arrest, and calls are kept confidential at the caller’s request, according to police.

Police also urged residents to be aware of their surroundings and take precautions if they are watched or followed.

“If anyone follows you, look confident and let him or her know you are aware of his/her presence,” the department advised in a written release. “Don't be polite or engage in conversation.”

More safety advice is available at the town’s website, www.townofcary.org.
