The Costco in Apex will open March 16, the retail giant has announced.
The members-only big-box store is at the new Nichols Plaza at the corner of U.S. 64 and Laura Duncan Road, across the street from Apex High School and just past the CrossRoads Infiniti South dealership.
Apex Mayor Lance Olive was on the Town Council when Costco was originally approved. He supported it then and said he’s still a fan.
“This is the perfect place for Costco,” he said. “If you put it farther west, it wouldn’t be as accessible to Cary. If you put it in Cary, it wouldn’t be as accessible to Apex. But this is right on the border.”
Costco lists the Apex store on its website as one of seven that will open this spring.
An ad in the Jan. 31 edition of Southwest Wake News confirms March 16 as the opening date.
The gas station at Costco opened last week. The attached shopping center, Nichols Plaza, will include smaller stores that are expected to open this summer, including Chipotle, McAllister’s Deli, Ruckus Pizza and Pasta, Mattress Firm, Great Clips, Harris Nails and T-Mobile.
“We have some deals that we’re working on, including another anchor tenant,” said Abbitt Goodwin Jr., who is managing the project for South Carolina-based Columbia Development. “But we’re not ready to announce anything yet.”
Costco job seekers can go to costco.com/jobs or find the Apex listings directly at bit.ly/1nyWGMO. There are three dozen types of jobs, ranging from tire installers to payroll clerks, pharmacy positions, cake decorators and forklift drivers.
The store will accept memberships starting Wednesday, Feb. 3, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the store at 1021 Pine Plaza Drive, Apex.
Traffic was a concern to some in town, but Olive said a traffic analysis shows Costco’s heaviest traffic wouldn’t coincide with rush hours or the start and end of the school day for nearby Apex High School. He said he doesn’t anticipate it as a problem.
He also said the company paid to extend Pine Plaza Drive from Lake Pine Drive to Laura Duncan Road, so shoppers coming from Cary won’t have to get on U.S. 64 and add to the highway traffic.
The Apex store will be the third in the Triangle. There are also Costco stores in Durham and Raleigh.
