A ground-breaking ceremony for Cary’s Fire Station 2 will be from 3-4 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, at 601 E. Fuquay-Varina’s Christmas tree lighting will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, in the parking lot at South Main and East Vance streets. There will be performances by local school groups, visits with Santa Claus and free sleigh rides.

Entries for Cary’s fourth annual Gingerbread House Competition will be accepted through Friday, Dec. 5. Fit & Able Productions’ Hot Chocolate Run will begin at 10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, on the trails at Fred G. Bond Metro Park, 801 High House Road. Runners and walkers of all ages and skill levels, and dogs, are welcome. Registration for the 5k race costs $20 for competitive runners and $15 for recreational runners; the one-mile race costs $15 for competitive and $10 for recreational; the doggy dash costs $5 with a registered runner.
