Apex finishes strong in 45-35 win over Fuquay

Powered by a nearly flawless second half, Apex roared back from a halftime deficit and outlasted Fuquay-Varina 45-35 Friday night.

The Cougars (4-2) scored touchdowns on each of their series in the second half. But it was Apex’s defense that fueled the surge, forcing turnovers on two straight possessions to start the half.

The Bengals (3-3) led 21-17 at halftime. On the second play of the third quarter, Apex’s Chazz Washington pounced on a Fuquay fumble. On the ensuing play, Apex quarterback Ian Boyd took off 39 yards to the end zone.

The Bengals fumbled again on their next possession, and Jordan Mann recovered for Apex. The Cougars went 71 yards on nine plays and took a 31-21 lead on Joey Copeland’s 5-yard TD run.

Fuquay cut the deficit to 31-28 with 8 minutes, 18 seconds to play on Damarus Williams’ 2-yard touchdown run – his third of the night.

But Apex struck for two quick touchdowns inside the final five minutes – one a 36-yard run by Isaiah Totten, the other a 45-yard run from Copeland – to hold on for the win.

Totten led Apex’s balanced rushing attack with 137 yards and two touchdowns; Copeland contributed 93 yards and two scores.

Boyd and Justin Cook shared the quarterback responsibilities for the Cougars, and they didn’t miss a beat.

Cook completed 7 of 10 passes for 94 yards, and he ran for the Cougars’ first touchdown. Boyd completed his only pass attempt for 15 yards, but ran for 106 and caught two passes for 38 yards.

Fuquay’s Williams led the Bengals with 138 yards and three touchdowns.
