Football matchups

Apex at Leesville Road

The Cougars (1-0) and Leesville (1-0) both blew out their opponents last week. Leesville Road’s Braxton Berrios, who reports offers from Oregon, Miami and pretty much every school in between, ran for four touchdowns and 200-plus yards last week in the first half. Apex could get back sophomore dual-threat quarterback Ian Boyd.

Game time: 7 p.m. Thursday

Broughton at Athens Drive

Athens Drive (0-1) and Broughton (0-1) both will be looking for their first win. Athens Drive assistant Chris Martin (not related to Athens head coach Chris Martin) was Broughton’s head coach last year.

Game time: 7:30 p.m. Thursday

Fuquay-Varina at Riverside

Durham Riverside (1-0) is coming off a defensive battle that was won in overtime. Fuquay (0-1) could have been saying the same thing, losing by 15 points while giving up 14 on defensive and special-teams touchdowns.

Game time: 7 p.m. Friday

Hickory Grove at Wake Christian

The Bulldogs (1-0) got their season off to a winning start last week, and this week will welcome Charlotte Hickory Grove.

Game time: 7 p.m. Friday

Hobgood Academy at Cary Christian

The Knights kick off the 2013 season with high hopes and a load of fresh new faces.

Game time: 7 p.m. Friday

E.E. Smith at Middle Creek

Come for the football, stick around for the band. Fayetteville’s E.E. Smith (1-0) has a show band that typically performs even on the road, and the Magnificent Marching Machine is fun to watch. Smith was the best team in Fayetteville last year, beating even Jack Britt for the conference title. Middle Creek (0-1) nearly defeated Garner last week, even after losing its starting quarterback during the game.

Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Cardinal Gibbons at Cary

Cary (1-0) won’t put it in the air against Gibbons (1-0), which negates the Crusaders’ strength from last week (three interceptions).

Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Heritage at Panther Creek

Heritage (1-0) will provide some similarities to Panther Creek’s (0-1) last opponent, Wake Forest. The Huskies are regarded as more explosive than Wake Forest but not as good defensively.

Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Wakefield at Holly Springs

In the last few years, this early-season game between the Wolverines (0-0) and Holly Springs (0-1) has accounted for lots of points.

Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Player of the week

With two interceptions, a blocked extra point and a few big hits, Cardinal Gibbons senior strong safety Jackson O’Korn changed the game in Friday’s 14-12 win against Green Hope.
