The State Bureau of Investigation charged a former Chatham County school employee with embezzling money from Northwood High School.
Pittsboro police arrested 45-year-old Karen Burnette Cheek of Moncure after a joint investigation with the SBI of the theft of more than $100,000 from the high school dating back to 2008, according to Pittsboro Police Chief Percy Crutchfield.
Cheek was the secretary and treasurer of the high school during that time and was charged with six counts of embezzlement totaling $81,017.
During a routine internal audit in late 2013, Chatham County Schools officials noticed the missing money and alerted the Pittsboro Police Department. Because the investigation involved public dollars, the department requested SBI assistance.
Released on a $50,000 unsecured bond, Cheek’s first court appearance is scheduled for May 18 at the Chatham County Justice Center in Pittsboro.
