A tractor-trailer driver was pronounced dead Tuesday night after his rig smashed into a bridge pillar on northbound Interstate 85 at the Durham Freeway exit, police said.
The 1994 Freightliner tractor-trailer, owned by a Hendersonville company and carrying tomatoes, had been in the center lane when it swerved and hit the pillar shortly after 9 p.m., witnesses told police.
Police identified the driver as Kenneth Lyle Anders, 53, of Lake Toxaway in Transylvania County.
It was unclear whether the driver died of injuries from the crash or for another reason. Police were investigating whether Anders had a medical problem that night have led to the accident.

Neither speed nor alcohol was a cause, investigators said.
The tomatoes scattered across the road, forcing police to close some lanes in both direction while crews cleaned up the debris.
