NCCU to neighbors, students: It’s only a drill today

Officials told residents and visitors around North Carolina Central University not to panic Tuesday if they see emergency personnel and equipment swarm the college. It's a drill.

Specifically, it is a practice at the intersection of South Alston Avenue and East Lawson Street for dealing with a hazardous materials incident.

The drill is nicknamed “Protect the Nest,” a reference to the school’s eagle mascot and name for its sports teams.

“If you hear sirens and other emergency alerts today, carry on!” the Durham County Sheriff’s Office told Twitter followers.
