Durham Police are investigating the death of a first-year student at N.C. Central University.
Hesakahi McCoy, 18, of Columbia, S.C., died Thursday, according to an announcement on the university’s website. The cause of death was not released.
McCoy was a criminal justice major who had only been at NCCU for a few weeks. He was active in the Men’s Achievement Center and other campus organizations, according to a letter to the campus community from Chancellor Debra Saunders-White.
“I also would ask that we keep Hesakahi’s family and friends in our thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time,” Saunders-White’s letter said. “The loss of such a young, energetic and extremely promising life is tragic, devastating and deeply emotional.”
The university provided counseling to students at Chidley Hall and A.E. Student Union.
