Fire strikes twice at Durham house being rebuilt

Firefighters on Monday night put out a fire in the basement of a one-story house under reconstruction at 127 Chestnut St., then were called back about 5:15 a.m. Tuesday and found flames coming from the main floor.

Investigators said they were trying to determine how Monday night’s fire began. There was no word on the morning fire, which apparently began in a different part of the structure, which is near the corner of South Street.

The house, which is about 1,400 square feet, was bought last December by Renaissance South Group.
